Master and Commander Posts: 1269 Location: Hopewell Junction NY | Subject: ETERNAL PATROL - RADM J. Brad Mooney He was LCDR & XO when I reported to USS Sea Robin in 1963 and I served under him for about 6 months. The crew LOVED the man as well as the CO at that time LCDR Johnstone, whose daughter Tracey posts on these BBS's. I feel honored to have served under them on my one and only boat. BIO Rear Adm. Brad Mooney ( Ret.) is one of the pioneers of deep ocean submersibles. A 1953 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Mooney commanded the attack submarine Menhaden and piloted the bathyscaph Trieste II in 1964 when it located the hull of the sunken nuclear submarine Thresher. He coordinated deep submersible and diving operations at a depth of 2,850 feet in the search and recovery of a hydrogen bomb lost off the coast of Spain in 1966. Mooney served as Oceanographer of the Navy and Chief of Naval Research. He was a member of the editorial board of the U.S. Naval Institute from 1983 until his retirement in 1987A humble guy who will be missed. Sailor, rest your oar. OBIT: Rear Admiral John Bradford, United States Navy (Retired) (March 26, 1931 - May 30, 2014) John Bradford "Brad" Mooney, Jr., one of the first few deep ocean submersible pioneers in the world passed away Friday, May 30, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 83 years. Mooney a USNA graduate (1953-21st company) proudly served his Country for 34 years. After his retirement from the Navy in 1987 Mooney continued his contributions to the science of deep submergence. Despite his impressive career, Mooney remained a modest man who truly believed that everyone was equal and was ever grateful to those who walked beside him throughout his earthly journey. Brad Mooney is survived by his wife of 24 years Jennie Marie "Jay" Mooney; daughters and sons in-law: Melinda Jean and Timothy Thomas of Mansfield, TX, Pamela and George Greenleaf of Wilmington, NC, Jennifer Joan and Dave Mattingly of Ashburn, VA; step-sons and wives: Devitt and Corine Adams of Cape Cod, MA, Darryl and Katie Adams of Austin, TX; and twelve grandchildren. Interment has been planned for Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Interment date will be determined by Arlington National Cemetery sometime in the fall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that those desiring to do so honor his memory with a contribution to the charity that they hold most dear.
