Last week, one of my copies of the daily Undersea Warfare News had an article from some flag officer [we sure got lottsa them nowadays] who said not to worry the technical problems are overwhelming and they're just blowing smoke. My take on these includes, among other things: If you're riding in a self generated air bubble how do you steer and control depth, also if you're surrounded by a bubble of air wouldn't you tend to be a bit heavy and drop right thru. Also how would a prop or propulsor work in air. You'd hafta have a hell hell of a rocket motor to push this thing at supersonic speeds for 10,000 miles or so on just a one way Pacific crossing. But what do I know? Anyway the author is an admiral and you can't get to his position being dumb. But then again.....

Agree with your analysis. Why in heck would they blab such a plan if it was even remotely feasible? I know if I could pull off this stunt, the world at large would be totally ignorant of it.
But as you said, what the hell do I know?

They just threw that out there hoping we would rush to beat them to the punch so they can then steal our plans....But then again we can design something that has only one dive in it's config...with no surfaces.
