We watched this segment on TV recently (you tube link below)

Eileen said she never had spam. I do remember my mother making it into small cubes to mix with macaroni and cheese.

I have a vague memory that in the Navy, they used to serve it in the base mess halls as "luncheon meat sandwiches" and fry it for breakfast.

I do not remember any spam on the boats or ship on which I served.

I keep a couple of cans in the cupboard just in case the GOP regains control of the executive branch and decides another country has fabricated weapons of mass destruction and another religion of billions needs to be poked with a big stick.

Love SPAM. Always have some in the pantry. Ms Bumps like it also, though in the Turkey variety.
We had a version that came in a 4" square can about 10 " long on the boat. The can had one of those strips you needed a key to wind to open.
I buy it from Costco in 8 can packs.
Love eating at our local Hawaiian Restaurants where it is on the menu. http://www.bobbyshawaiianstylerestaurant.com/main/takeout.html

Talked to a WW II subvet at the Mobile convention in '97. I was wearing my official SPAM T-shirt, He told me how much he hated Spam. Seems they were heading out on patrol and were side tracked to pick up a large group of civilians from a island and had them aboard for over a week before they could drop them off. The civilians had eaten almost all the good food and the boat finished the patrol pn Spam and Rice.

I love spam. We also have some in the pantry. I remember mess cooking on the bird farm I was on and I was opening up a long tin of it, kaki green in color with a date of 1944 stamped on it, this was in 1960. I showed that to the cook and he said it's still good since it's packed in a gel that keeps it fresh...Sure enough it was plenty good and I fell in love with it since I couldn't always get steak with my eggs....

SPAM is an American institution. Unless somebody jumps in and says it's French. Anyhow, we had it in my family. You could grind it up with some dill pickle, mix with mayo, and spread it on bread for a tasty sandwich. That's just one of the million ways to serve it. Can't say I remember carrying ti on the FBMs although anything that could stay preserved was welcome as long as it didn't develop a green ring around it.

I won't hear a bad word said against Spam. If it hadn't been for those cans of Spam and cartons of dried eggs most British kids would not have survived the war years, so desperate was the situation with food shortages and rationing. The people who complain about today's so-called austerity should be made to take a step back in time to understand and appreciate the true meaning of the term. At school we were taught about the great dangers faced and sacrifices made by Allied sailors to bring those foodstuffs across the Atlantic to us. The older kids used to chant a parody of the Lords Prayer at school assemblies that went something like this:

Our Father, who art in America
Please send us lots of ham, Spam, bread and jam.

Some things you never forget. At that time there was a similar canned luncheon meat called Prem, does anyone else remember that one? Tomorrow morning I'm going to cook me up some Spam fritters fried in batter. In boats we called them Elephants Footprints - Mmmm! - delicious with baked beans and a couple of eggs sunny side up.

Real Boat made bread, thin sliced fried Spam and square eggs (a solid pad of scrambled eggs cut into squares to fit the toast). Two of those and engine-room coffee comprised a great breakfast during the last part of refit when we seemed to live in the engine room. Only had them for three refits, and the baker that made them left the boat.

Don,

Wow! Never realised there were so many different varieties of Spam, though I doubt they are available over here. Perhaps another convoy needs forming to get some of the new versions over here pronto lol. See the recipe below for Spam fritters. I like to add a pinch of garlic, paprika and black pepper onto the slices of meat but with all your choices you can have any flavouring you want already in the can. The Jalapeño one sounds real good to me. Read somewhere that Hormel Foods the makers of Spam announced the return of the spam fritter in 2006 producing them in pre-packaged form, presumably for the American market. This would save you the trouble of making a batter mix. Bon appetit.

When I visited Russia for the second time (1994) I took cans of Spam with me. Took them to the people I visited. The older folks, survivors of WWII, remembered Spam from then. Literally saved the lives of a lot of people there. One elderly lady, now long dead, thanked me profusely for bringing back memories of meals from America.

We used to go to Katz's twice a month when we worked Wall St. on Saturdays...As a matter of fact, my father went there when he was 18 y.o. after West Side dance's. In those days, Katz's was open 24 hours a day...Great food.

Bro, dantini, said to post this one for you:  You won't find it on your pantry shelf (unless you're in Hawaii).  Quietly introduced some months back but in Hawaii ONLY where the love of Portuguese Sausage is greatest!  My daughter send and brings these to me - quite good, not strong but with just enough flavor....

AtoZ - after reading your post, I went to the Katz's website and considered buying a Pastrami sandwich for a whopping $60 to see if it was a good as you claimed.  When I filled out the order form, I found out that they charge an exceptional $75 shipping fee for that $60 order.  There is NO Pastrami sandwich in the world that is worth $135.  I don't care how good it may be.  I'll just have to take your word for that.

You can always come to NYC. We've got an extra bedroom which is generally unused.

In Katz' the Pastrami sandwich is $16.95, cash only, no tip necessary since you pick it up at the carving counter, cafeteria style, yourself.

It's worth the trip just for the sandwich.

Thanks for the offer AtoZ.  If Meg Ryan was going to be there when I was there, it would well be worth the expense and I wouldn't mind that expenditure at all.   However, I'm pretty sure she is not waiting for me to show up, so I will have to pass on your generous offer.  I will take your word for how good the sandwiches actually are, as they look really special on their webpage.

There used to be a KATZ'S DELI in Austin when I lived there. I went there once.  As far as the Texans knew, it was authentic NYC deli.  That was about as accurate as AUTHENTIC TEXAS BBQ was in NYC at the time.

Okay, now listen, I’m gonna ask you to drop everything you’re doing and just wire me $2,000. I need it to get access to a vast fortune that’s been left to me by a Nigerian prince who just happens to be a distant relative. And I promise that when I get the money, I’ll give you a big cut. That’s got to work, right? I mean, if it didn’t, why would Nigerian prince scam spam clog your in-box year after year?

No, it was in 2000 when I was working on the Warner Brothers Studios project with Micropath and they sent us to NY to do MAD Magazine offices and DC Comics offices as well as Queen Latifa's Office and Rosie O’Donnell's Office. We were there two weeks. The deli was close to one of the offices.
