Sr., CAPT, USN, Ret., 86, beloved husband of Eleanor (Muldoon) Emery, died peacefully, on Sunday, July 2, 2017, in the presence of his loving family. Bob was born in Manchester, N.H. on Jan. 11, 1931, to Harold and Teresa (McGuigan) Emery. After graduating from St. Joseph's High School in Manchester, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While enrolled in Electronics and Technician School, he transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. which was followed by attendance at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. His first assignment after graduating from the Naval Academy was on board the USS Columbus, home ported in Long Beach, Calif. Upon completion of a deployment to the Western Pacific, Bob returned to Lawrence, Mass. to marry Eleanor Muldoon. They returned to Long Beach and the Columbus before receiving orders in 1957 to report to the USS Hopewell, home ported in San Diego, Calif. Serving as the CIC Officer, the Hopewell embarked on a deployment to the Western Pacific, which included a port visit to Sydney, Australia. While deployed, Bob received transfer orders to report to the U.S. Naval Submarine School in Groton, beginning a long career as a submariner. Bob's introduction to submarine sea duty began in 1958 aboard the USS Piper in Groton where he served as Weapons, Engineering and Operations Officer. This tour of duty included a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and operations with several ships of foreign navies. It also included a visit to Naples, Italy and a trip to Rome, where he attended a Christmas morning Mass celebrated by the Pope. In 1962, Bob reported to the Naval Submarine School to become an instructor in the engineering department. Bob transferred to the USS Blenny in Groton in 1964, where he served as Operations Officer, Navigator and Executive Officer. He received orders in 1966 to report to Washington, D.C. to serve as a part of the Chief of Naval Operations Submarine Warfare Division within the Pentagon's Puzzle Palace. A submarine command tour followed in 1969 aboard the USS Cubera stationed in Key West, Fla. He received orders in 1971 to return to Groton to serve as Operations Officer on the staff of Commander Submarine Group Two. Bob returned to the U.S. Naval Submarine School in 1974 as the Director of the Basic Enlisted Submarine School which was followed by appointment as the Executive Officer of Submarine School. Bob retired from the U.S. Navy in 1980 and opened a successful appliance service business operating in New London County for over twenty years. Bob was also a devout member of the Saint Paul Parish in Waterford for 50 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a coach in Waterford Little League. Bob leaves his wife of 60 years, Eleanor of Waterford; his son, Michael Emery of Waterford; his daughter, Laurie Fucigna and her husband, James, of Hopkinton, Mass.; his daughter, Elizabeth Arnold and her husband, Eric, of Hebron; and his son, Robert Emery Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Avon. He also leaves 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Brian and Thomas Emery; Alex (Fucigna) Green, her husband, Ben, and two children, Miles and Emmett; Sarah (Fucigna) Wilbur and her husband, Bryan; Erin, Abby and Peter Fucigna; Stephen, Lauren, Ryan and Adam Arnold; Kathryn, Kyle and Kristen Emery; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother, Harold, and his sister, June. Capt. Emery's funeral will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, July 7, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Church, 170 Rope Ferry Road in Waterford. He will be laid to rest in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. He graduated from The University of the State of New York in business. A US Naval Veteran, Michael was an electronic technician and reactor operator on a ballistic missile submarine stationed in Groton, CT. Mike was born Sept 2, 1952 in Danville, IL, and raised in Covington, IN. He worked as a Network Team Leader, senior IT specialist, Project Manager with IBM Global Services. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his family. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, CT. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Columbarium in the State Veterans Cemetery at Middletown, CT. Friends will be received from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the funeral home.
