So if d = days and a = algebra uses,
did you just say a / d = 0?

Algebra; the step change from basic arithmetic to higher mathematics designed to find a required unknown factor employing a formula of letters to arrive at a solution. Like many other school kids I considered the subject a monumental waste of time and a royal pain in the arse, until I entered the world of engineering. Once there I had to seriously re-evaluate my opinion and re-learn it if I was to advance towards achieving any engineering qualifications necessary for my job in the RN.

But outside the realms of engineering, physics, mathematics and a few other applications I can understand why most people contemptuously dismiss it. Billy Connolly was once a welder in a Clyde shipyard and here is his hilarious take on algebra. Be careful who is listening as the language is - well just what you get from Billy Connolly.

Forgot to mention that I enjoyed my high school algebra course so much, I took it TWICE!

As with all wells, this has been a rather deep discussion.

Welcome!! In my freshman year of high school, I had to change schools in 3 different states the first semester algebra was taught. Did I pass? Fat chance. I still don't memorize very well and axioms and postulates didn't turn me on then or now.

I loved Algebra.
So much, in fact, I kept repeating it, 3 years of it in High School and 3 times in Summer School.
As a result of all this cramming I graduated 1/4 point shy of getting my picture into the Senior yearbook.

After 8 years in the Navy, I went into Engineering and was a practicing Licensed Professional Engineer for over 30 years.
Never once did I even see anything remotely related to Algebra.
Geometry, Calculus, Trigonometry, of course.
But never did find a use for Algebra.
Not even in Algiers.

I found algebra helped my problem solving and thinking skills.

On the other hand, 3 years of the French language were of little value to me.

Like Gary I enjoyed Algebra so I took it twice with once in Summer School. I even gave up a few weeks of vacation for the love of it. Irony being so ironic I did get "A"s and "B"s in Calculus in college. Go figure. Since college was after the Navy maybe being on board the boats re-aligned my brain cells.

My knowledge of math ended at short division in the 4th grade. You may as well have been trying to teach me Mandarin when I was introduced to algebra in the 8th grade.

Like Ric I haven't used algebra today or yesterday. Not even once...

My father was a user of Algebra and Calculus - he was a metallurgical research engineer. My son is a chemical engineer at a 'practical plant' - he doesn't use algebra.
As I would tell people at property investment seminars "I used to be a trained killer" - therefore I didn't need it.

Could come in handy for planning purposes.

If your shooting is 100% accurate 80% of the time and 80% accurate the rest of the time, how many bullets will you need on your next five target assignment?

Federal guidelines required a score of 95 out of 100 to qualify with a handgun. That was difficult until they eliminated the 25 yard shoot. I usually also shot between 96 and 98 even with the 25 yard shoot. Things got harder when they added tactical reloads and timed shoots. That's when I decided I'd rather spend my Winter in Florida rather than guarding federal facilities.
