BLACKFORD, Clarence, 82, passed away Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017. The son of the late Jesse and Royal Blackford, Ray was born in Grayville, Ill., on August 3, 1935. He joined the Navy at 17 and spent 20 years with the Silent Service on diesel and nuclear submarines ("boomers") as a cook, including tours during the Korean War and Vietnam, then further serving as part of the Nuclear Triad.
