COMSUBBBS Posts: 2974 Location: Liverpool, England	Subject: RN's Latest Boat Builds Two of the RN's latest boat builds HMS Ambush and HMS Audacious. The claim that their sonar's can detect vessels leaving New York harbour from a submerged listening post in the English Channel is impressive. My first thought was it might be a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Second thought was, what do I know about today's technologies and their capability parameters? Deep sound channel and noise travels 'forever.' In Onslow, 1981, we carried out the first tests of an RAN Oboat with a deployed chemical filled towed array sonar. At the bottom corner of Western Australia, as we entered the Indian Ocean, we were listening to traffic leaving the Gulf of Hormuz. This array was towed along, at own depth , a short distance behind the submarine. North Atlantic is a good listening platform as well. Newer arrays cab be deployed to different depths and have steerable listening arcs.
