| Plankowner Posts: 5024 Location: Gulfport, MS | Subject: Thursday Obits, USN, RN, Greek RUSSELL, Art D., 76, of Bay City, Michigan was called home by the Lord on Tuesday October 3, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 31, 1941 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Rueben E. Sr. and Elsie M. (Cathey) Russell. He married Millie J. Sinn on October 21, 1977, and she survives him. Art retired from the U.S. Navy as Sonar Technician Senior Chief on October 16, 1979, with over 21 years of active service and 17 years in the Naval Reserve. Art's naval experience included service on 7 submarines, on the Operational Submarine Admiral Staff, and as instructor at Fleet Sonar School. Art had extensive experience as Sonar Supervisor and in sonar tracking operations and maintenance. He was very handy around the house and always enjoyed building things. Art was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Life member of the V.F.W. Post 15023, D.A.V., and the American Legion Post 18. He also served as Exalted Ruler of the Manassas Elks Lodge #2512, which later merged to become the Woodbridge Lodge #2355, of which he was a lifetime member. Surviving besides his wife Millie, he leaves five children, Peter A. Russell; Christine M. Tracie; Rebecca L. Russell; Michael J. Russell (Rebecca Burmeister); Michelle J. (Sam) Williams; grandchildren, Cheyanne M. Russell; Isaac E. Williams along with five other grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Reuben E. (Barbara) Russell Jr. and two sisters, Patricia M. Hobbs and Carolyn F. (J.R.) Jeffries. Funeral service will take place on Saturday October 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the Squires Funeral Home. Bay County Veteran's Council will begin with military honors followed by Pastor Joe Atchinson. Private burial in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Donald was a resident of Rexford, Montana at the time of passing. Don joined the US Navy in 1951 during the Korean War and served aboard a destroyer and submarine. HALL, Alvin L, 75, of Grant, MI went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, October 4, 2017. He was born May 14, 1942 in Fremont, MI to John and Laura (Coburn) Hall. Mr. Hall was a 1960 graduate of Grant High School and served his country in the United States Navy as a submariner. On August 22, 1964, he married the former Marie A. Robinson in Grant, MI. Alvin was an electrician for many years and had owned and operated A.L. Hall Electric in Muskegon. Along with his wife, Marie, they attended Grant Community Church and while living in Muskegon also attended McGraft Congregational Church. He was a member of the Antique John Deere Club, was a faithful Michigan State fan, enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all, loved spending time with family. Survivors include his wife, Marie of Grant; son, Michael (Trisha) Hall of Norton Shores; 4 grandchildren: Erin (Michael) Tucker, Landen Hall, Lauren Hall, and Leah Hall; great-grandson, Patrick Tucker; brother, John (Sandy) Hall of South Dakota; sister, Ellyne Stephan of Grand Rapids; and many other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Shannon Marie Hall in 1993. Services will be 11:00 AM Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Grant Community Church (115 W. State Rd., Grant, MI 49327) with Pastor Steve VanderWest officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 2-5 PM Sunday, October 15, 2017 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. George was born on Dec. 22, 1932, in Poros, Greece, to the late John and Anastasia (Stratikis) Kizanis. On July 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary Sakellarides, who predeceased him in 2006.George grew up in Poros, Greece, survived the Nazi occupation of Greece and joined the Greek Navy as a young man for a better life. He became a sonar operator on a Greek submarine, traveled to many places, and came to the United States in 1958 and met his future wife, Mary. Two years later, they married in Greece and built a life in Norwich. They had one daughter, Ann, who was their pride and joy and the light of their lives. George worked at American Thermos, Electric Boat and Pervel Industries in the early years. He was later owner of Angie's Pizza in Mystic, Family Pizza Restaurant in Colchester and Arista Pizza Restaurant in Mystic. George was always a hard worker, efficient, reliable, friendly, and helpful to those around him. George took many evening adult education courses when he first came from Greece and always had a desire to read and keep learning. He enjoyed walking, exercising, and swimming throughout his life. George was a devoted husband and father. He was a soft spoken person and a true gentleman. He was loved by all who knew him, as he had a big heart and kind soul and tried to always offer his best advice to those he knew and loved and those he may have just met. George's open heart, affectionate nature, smile, and bright blue eyes that lit up his face brought joy to those around him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. 5George is survived by his only child, his loving daughter, Ann Kizanis Klapper and her husband, Andy Klapper, of East Longmeadow, Mass.; his four brothers, Christos, Nikos, Costas and Alexandros and their wives, in Greece; sister-in-law, Ann Sakellarides of Norwich; brother-in-law, Nicholas Billias of Groton Long Point; nephew, Ulysses Sakellarides of Norwich; niece, Elaine Billias of Gales Ferry; niece, Meg Sakellarides Mokoski and her husband, Scott, of East Haddam; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Greece. He is predeceased by his brother, Anastasios; and his sister, Pope, in Greece. Relatives and friends are invited for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich with Trisagion Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Divine Liturgy service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 247 Washington St., Norwich, with burial to follow at the Maplewood Cemetery.
