Nothing has changed. Any modern non-nuclear propelled submarine is hard to find when not running main engines.
Sound waves can have interesting travel patterns. Sea-Water Temperature changes can result in large virtually not forecastable shadow zones. Yes they will be there but exactly where? Only local presence can show - for that given time and depth.
