Old Salt Posts: 438 Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL | Subject: Rate vs Rating It has always been my understanding that enlisted sailors don’t have “rank”.
Their somewhat equivalent is rating (occupation) and rate which is an indicator of pay grade.
However, the terms are often used interchangeably such as in“Choose your rate, choose your fate”.
On another website a retired USN O-5 is claiming that rate is merely shorthand for rating.

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 715 Location: Conway, NH | Subject: RE: Rate vs Rating The use of the word "rank" for Navy enlisted personnel is incorrect. The term is "rate." The rating badge is a combination of rate (pay grade, as indicated by the chevrons) and rating (occupational specialty, as indicated by the symbol just above the chevrons). http://www.navy.mil/navydata/ranks/rankrate.html | ||
