I didn't realise that they had re-introduced this tradition of manning the mast after its discontinuation at the closure of the training school HMS Ganges in 1976. The mast at Daedalus is 96' but the one at Ganges was 145'. As trainees we had to climb to the Devils Elbow at 130' each day of the week except for Sundays. The 'button boy' would have to swarm up the remaining 15' section to reach the button when he took the salute at mast ceremonies. The ratlines/ladder set-up at Daedalus looks safer than what we experienced back in the 50's which has to be a good thing whilst still keeping the tradition alive. Some years I wrote in more detail about Ganges and the infamous mast. If you go to search, then enter HMS Ganges, then enter Pedro, and then select all posts, you will find a number of posts. Click the one called "Sure Cure For Vertigo." There were photos that have now been removed because Photo Bucket now want a ridiculous fee for third party postings of photos. There is an old film clip link that still works. Hope this helps mate. Pedro | ||
