As to the string across the missile compartment when going to test depth, we did that. At test depth we tied the string tight and had a pool to see at what depth going up the string would break.

A few bubbleheads tried to keep it focused but the nitwits just kept driving off the cliffs. Up Periscope was good because I know I served with everyone of those nutcases. Good shots of Pampanito being towed around the bay. Don't care for Kelsey Grammer. Never could stand his TV shows.

All in the fore-ends and a trip to full diving depth. Good to check for leaks anyway. The string usually broke around the 100 ft mark coming back to pd.
