| Plankowner Posts: 5024 Location: Gulfport, MS | Subject: Obit Messenger results for 09/29/07. SHANKLIN, John Patrick, 61 of Charlotte died at his residence on Wednesday, September 26, 2007. He was born in Charlotte September 14, 1946 son of Walt Shanklin of Denver, NC and the late Florence Soule Shanklin. Pat graduated from Myers Park High School in 1964 and attended NC State University and East Carolina University. He served in the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine USS Sea Devil (SSN-664) based in Newport News, VA. Pat worked as a professional photographer in the Charlotte area for most of his life, focusing on architectural design. Many of Pat's photographs were featured in the Charlotte Observer Home Section and cover pages of local magazines. He was also commissioned to photograph various architectural subjects in New York City and outside of the U.S. Besides his passion for photography, Pat was an avid sailor. He loved to sail with family or friends, and often by himself. He was always at home on the water. Pat loved music and was a master of conversation. His amusing stories and insightful observations about life entertained so many of us. We will always carry fond memories of his infectious smile and the special way that he touched us all. In addition to his father survivors include his sisters, Mary Brown and husband, Ron of Denver, NC Alice Greene and husband, Jimmy of Lincolnton, NC and Linda Elliott and husband, Rick of Alpharetta, GA; brothers, Ron Shanklin of Myrtle Beach, SC, Robert Shanklin of Denver, NC, Mark Shanklin and wife, Michele of Denver, NC and Jeff Shanklin of San Carlos, Mexico; nieces, Laura and Caroline Elliott and nephews Steven and John Elliott and Brett and Ryan Shanklin. Funeral Service for Mr. Shanklin will be held at Dilworth United Methodist Church on Monday, October 1, at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service on Sunday afternoon September 30, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to the Florence Shanklin Library Memorial Garden, 7837 Fairfield Forest Road, Denver, NC 28037. VIENT, Donald "Don" P., 83, of 222 Chapel St., Gardner, died Thursday, September 27, 2007 in The Highlands, Fitchburg. Born in Worcester on June 28, 1924, he was the son of John L. and Bertha (Hopriopel) Vient. He was a self-employed drummer playing for various musical groups, until retiring in 1991. He was also a truck driver employed by Coyne Industrial Laundries, Inc. of Worcester. Don was a 1942 graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School. For several years he had a season pass to the Holy Cross Football games, courtesy of his uncle, Coach Hopriopel. He was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics. Don especially enjoyed walking his dog, Skippy. Don was a World War II US Navy Veteran and served on the submarine USS PUFFER (SS-268). He leaves his wife of 28 years, Winifred D. (Arnold) Vient of Gardner; 2 sons, Gary J. Vient of Monson and Donald P. Vient Jr. of Springfield; 2 stepsons, Donald W. Capman and his wife Bonnie of Sterling, and Bruce T. Capman of Taunton. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Vient who died in the Cocoanut Grove Fire in Boston on November 28, 1942. Private Graveside services at Notre Dame Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum, Worcester, MA will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
