So a probably junior officer was carrying out an old periscope target approach. Might have been completely done using the Mk I eyeball and in-head calculations.

For a ferry to see a periscope, the submarine would be on the beam (no danger) or ahead and probably preparing to carry out a duck and under, then back up again. Irish sea area, every possibility that a boat was being used for COQC (Perisher) course.

Nothing to worry about, apart from the fact that the periscope was left dangling too long and thus spotted.

Certainly wasn't the first time. Operating out of Holy Loch there were several ferry incidents in the seventies.
