The USS Drum, a near-70-year-old decommissioned submarine based at the Battleship Parkway in Mobile, caught fire Friday, resulting in thick smoke inside the hull of the vessel and the surrounding park.

No such thing as an accident when there is welding. Adequate fire prevention at welding sites or megligence; this would have been negligence. Surprising as well, the number of people who do not know how to use an extinguisher correctly; that includes firefighters. |

Looks like the fire watch might have been napping in the Notre Dame Cathedral fire as well.
Maybe not but there is always that suspicion when repairs or mods are being done.
Too bad at any rate. |

Something to always remember " Your judgement is only as good as your information". Restoration of the Drum has been accomplished almost exclusively by one individual with a little help from a female helper. If he didn't work alone, no restoration would have happened. Maybe there was a fire watch. The article doesn't say there wasn't. If you have information we do not have please send the link. |

fortyeod - had there been a firewatch, there would have been no fire. Firewatch should be on station from start of the job until the job site has cooled down. If power is involved, remain until all powered areas are operating correctly.
One person working alone is not able to work and firewatch at the same time. |
