Master and Commander Posts: 1603 | Subject: RE: Modern U-Boat Sailors Only eighty boat sailors overall and six submarines - I'm guessing three boats at the most are deployed? Interesting to me while maneuvering to sea the captain is on the scope, and goes topside only as a last check before the boat dives - I can't imagine any skipper not wanting to be topside in a busy port - I can't imagine a skipper preferring the bridge over a periscope in a busy port. The video made a comment the helmsman is to go to the proper depth? Since their crew is 30 or less maybe that explains the helm being responsible for depth, or are the helm and bow planes interconnected these days on boats, or maybe the comment was simply a misstatement? In any case thank you for sharing this video with us. Edited by Gil 2020-02-24 1:08 PM

Seems like an awful lot of trash, plastic bottles and cans, never mind the beer bottles. One ORSE I got a ride in a body bag to the ships freezer from ERUL. Got bumped on more than one hatch. Wonder how the guy on the soft stretcher made out. How does 60 seconds compare to dive time for a WWII Sub? Seems a bit tighter quarters than on my FBM

Master and Commander Posts: 1603 | Subject: RE: Modern U-Boat Sailors I was talking to a former mess cook on another diesel boat. I guess sometime before '68 when he was mess cooking on a Pearl to Pearl run. A Chief died suddenly of what was an aneurysm. The crew couldn't do anything but put the body bag in one of the freeze boxes until they could move to a location many days later and rendezvous with a helicopter to remove the body. I was just about to start my mess cooking and remember the guy telling me of how eerie it felt having to crawl over the body bag to get provisions for soup downs.

Master and Commander Posts: 1576 Location: Wollongong, NSW | Subject: RE: Modern U-Boat Sailors The planes in a one man control system are linked. Depth control is not as accurate as the separate planes and helm can be but those circumstances are few and far between. WWII Uboats could get under in seconds. The modern submarine has smaller openings in casing and ballast tanks to reduce flow noise. Once the snorkel system became 'everyday' fit, the need for a fast diving boat was gone. Fresh water is rarely made in a non-nuclear, the power required is too high. In the tropics, the condensation forming on the A/C plants was far more than the distiller could ever make. Everyone could have a daily saltwater shower followed by a quick freshwater rinse.
