Thanks, Ric, I thoroughly enjoyed that documentary and learned some stuff about the Victoria Cross decorations history I wasn’t aware of. Private Bill Speakman VC visited my school in my penultimate year as part of a publicity drive I’m sure he wanted no part of. He was an impressive sight in his Black Watch uniform standing 6’ 6” tall and left me thinking he must have scared the living daylights of those Chinese troops. He was the first to be awarded the VC medal by our then new Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. A modest giant of a man he gave us a short speech about teamwork in the armed forces and the need for it in Civilian Street but never once mentioned the medal he had won so bravely in Korea.
