November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location you served, is the National Vietnam War Veterans Day!
U.S. involvement in Vietnam started slowly with an initial deployment of advisors in the early 1950s, grew incrementally through the early 1960s and expanded with the deployment of full combat units in July 1965. The last U.S. personnel were evacuated from Vietnam in April 1975.

Yeah. I'm such a youngster. Spec Op 1972, Haiphong Harbor then finally after exiting the harbor on 22 Dec. I finish quals and earn my dolphins. We were there because someone had intel that there was gonna be a breakout from the Hanoi Hilton. Even thugh we had no idea at the time who he was in later years I joke about going to rescue John McCain. Boy, time flies. |

No thank you. I served 1960-64, never heard of Viet Nam. I will not take any credit for what many of our troops (including my younger brother) and sailors did in-country.

I didn't know I was in Viet Nam waters until our XO came through the engine room passing out medals.
I think we went there to get tax free money, especially those that shipped over in the war zone
I missed out when the Barbel sank the freighter by accident off of Viet Nam. |

Chris,We were at Yankee Station around your time, the end of June 1968 for I believe for the same reason. The only guy shipping over a second class mess cook. His paltry bonus barely covered what he owed the rec fund. I don't remember being given the medal, but I know we got the ribbon. I think we "sank" the Kitty Hawk in our war games, and we did get to see the New Jersey.
