Master and Commander Posts: 1277 Location: NE Florida | Subject: RE: Maintenence problems We hold RAYunions to celebrate our service aboard USS RAY (SSN653). The RAYunion in 2017 was held in Norfolk, fifty years after the ship's commissioning at NNS&DD across the river. We had set up submarine tours - half the group toured Virginia-class John Warner, the other half Boise. Those who toured Boise came back dejected to find a boat in such shape - not physically bad, but mentally bad. The reactor "keys" had been taken away due to lack of skilled nukes. They couldn't qualify because they couldn't the things required. The crew (much smaller) stood duty, did some housekeeping, and went ashore. They said the maintenance funds could not be found to pay for the work due to new-construction needs. So it sat and sat at NS Norfolk. USS Ray (above) was one of THIRTEEN submarines authorized by the Congress in the single year 1963 at the height of the submarine cold war with Russia. Now we can't find the dollars to refuel one.
