MMCS (SS) James Carl "Jim" Stewart, USN, Ret James Carl "Jim" Stewart, 72, passed away on January 9, 2026, in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was born on August 3, 1953, in Philippi, West Virginia, to Henson Stewart and Frances Stewart (King). Jim was a proud United States Navy veteran. He enlisted in the Navy on December 7, 1970, serving as a Machinist Mate. He spent his entire naval career assigned to submarines, dedicating his professional life to service at sea. With a period of broken service, Jim honorably completed 20 years of active-duty service and retired in June 1997 at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. His career was defined by technical excellence, steadfast leadership, and deep pride in the submarine force and the sailors he served alongside. Following his Navy career, Jim worked as a defense contractor before fully retiring. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Minnie Stewart (Foster); his brother, John Stewart (Christy) of Clarksburg, WV; his daughter, Tonya Davis (Kurt) of Chesapeake; his son, James Carl "Jay" Stewart Jr. (Cathy) of Chesapeake; granddaughters Kirsten, Emerson "Emmy," and Taylor Davis; granddaughters, Jora Stewart and Olivia Perez; one grandson, James Carl Stewart III; and one great-grandson, Hudson Davis. His family was the center of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. He was preceded in death by his father, Henson Stewart; his mother, Frances Stewart; his brothers, Ronald Stewart and William "Jeb" Stewart; and his sister, Deborah Sloan. In his free time, Jim loved attending church, reading the Bible, spending time with his family, camping and watching football, though nothing quite matched his enjoyment of watching a good western.
