Subject: Peacoats

I saw on a Navy site that some guys were talking about being issued peacoats at enlistment, and having them deducted from your pay.  I'm trying to find when, and if it still is the same.

Mine was issued in '65, and maybe it still fits me.  Dumb me gave it to an ex-roommate for some stupid reason.  Does anyone  even make them with the same thickness, and quality these days?  Many more current guys say the peacoats they were issued that don't even keep you warm like the ones from our day.

I bought an Alpine Swiss Double Breasted unit in the fall of 2018 for $35 on ebay. Wore it last month without incident excepting for the "Thank you for your service" well appreciated comments that hit me right smack dab in the feels.

Got mine at Great Lakes March 1960. It was way too big for me. However now I can hardly button it. I am twice the man I used to be! LOL!

Gary, is it the same thickness and as warm as the original issue?  If it is that seems a great price.  My guess is the 60's type issue wouldn't be under $100.  At Pearl mine was never needed, but standing topside watch in a January Yokosuka it kept me warm.  The poster said his more recently issued peacoat failed in doing that.

Gil, I don't recall wearing my Peacoat in a truly cold weather situation. I tended to treat mine as I did dress uniforms, stowed away clean, till needed. I left with a green work jacket I kept way too long. Look, if someone has hired you to preform tasks where extra warm attire is needed. Make them buy it.
On second thought, why are you prepping fer looking good COLD?

I still have mine in a closet with a cover over it to keep the dust away. Issued 3/63 and will still fit when I drop 20-30 pounds. Years ago, when they were more popular, the old ones were selling for around $300. More value if your service number was still visible inside the coat attesting to its originality. Who knows about today's prices.

At Great Lakes in the Fall of 1967 we were issued a peacoat. Did not get to wear it until week 8 or 9 when we were sent out to Chicago for liberty to see if we could find our way back.

A few years later, up at Groton, I purchased a peacoat for my brother who had returned from Vietnam and asked me to get him one.

By 1972ish you had to turn in an old ratty peacoat before you could buy a new one, since they had become a fashion statement for some civilians.

I wore mine for years until it did not fit. Not sure what happened to it.

I gave my peacoat to my son. I don't know if he still has it.
I still have, and wear, my Westpac foul weather coat.
Being stationed in Hawaii, I never needed to wear a peacoat. Being in the Reserves in San Diego was the same situation.

I still have my dirty clothes bag, my blanket, bunk bag and seabag. All the other West Pac stuff was stolen.

I was issued mine at boot camp in Orlando, Fl. I thought at the time time, "why do I need such a heavy piece of clothing." Part of boot camp is shut mouth, engage brain. I left Orlando in January for Sub School in New London. I then pulled my first run on a submarine up to Prince Edward Island in Canuck land. That coat got a lot of use. I no longer fits. And one thing I could never figure out (finally I had learned to shut mouth) was why would one put a crow on a peacoat. Part of my problem was I never saw a crow higher than 3rd class. So, I didn't know if it was regs. Anyway, I just stayed very warm in mine. And when not wearing it, I was in my trusty green foul weather jacket.

I had my MT1 sewn on my Pea Coat. It helped with making friends with a higher class of ladies. You know, the ones who knew about ProPay.
