You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. STAPLES .. .. .. Charles Staples died peacefully at his home in Santa Rosa on November 29, 2012. He was 95. Born on June 27, 1917 in Malden, MA, he attended Georgia Tech and was a member of Naval ROTC. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1938, one of six in his class to find a job. He worked in Dallas, TX and attended First Presbyterian Church, where he met Nancy Wills Pulliam. When his Naval Reserve unit was called to active duty in World War II, he and Nancy were married on November 22, 1941. They were together 61 years, until Nancy’s passing in 2002. During the war, Charlie served in the US Navy Submarine service on the USS-Gabilan and as skipper on USS S-42. He retired in 1946 as Lieut. Comdr. After the war, they returned to Dallas and he worked for Proctor and Gamble. They raised three daughters, Marguerite (French), Carol (Critz) and Susan (Hathaway). He continued to work for P & G thirty years, as plant engineer in Sacramento and Jackson, TN. He was always active in church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, serving on session, and other committees. He enjoyed being Boy Scout master in Dallas and in Sacramento at Washington Neighborhood Center. At retirement, Charlie and Nancy built a home in Morro Bay and enjoyed cruising on their sailboat “Pelican”. In 1998 they moved to Santa Rosa. After Nancy’s passing, Charlie continued to serve as Deacon at First Presbyterian Church. He loved his family and had seven grand children and eight great-grandchildren. He was a remarkable man who will always be remembered. BARNES .. .. .. MANCHESTER, NH — Richard “Rick” Barnes (March 20, 1955 – March 5, 2026) passed away peacefully on March 5, from complications of COPD and pneumonia. Raised in Swampscott, MA, Rick was an avid hockey fan and player in his youth, He started his own small business sharpening ice skates for friends and neighbors who skated nearby at Clarke school park. He was well known for his adventurous spirit, and zest for life. Rick served in the United States Navy in the submarine service. Following his service, he worked as a member of the Laborers’ Union. His career included the building of Bethel Hospital in Alaska, and along side his brother Mike worked at the Shemya Air Force Base in the Aleutian Islands. He also worked in Florida, North Carolina, and at the Philadelphia Shipyards. When he returned to New England, prior to his retirement Rick worked at Sullivan Mechanical Services in Wilmington, MA. For the last several years Rick lived in New Hampshire, and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and working with his hands. He could create anything from custom cribbage boards to his biggest project of restoring a beautiful wooden sailboat which he sailed solo from Salem to Gloucester. He fought hard through his various health challenges. Rick was predeceased by his parents Forrest and Elizabeth Barnes, and is survived by his daughters Elizabeth and Emily, of Mississippi, 8 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, as well as his brothers Forrest of North Reading, Michael of Ireland and sisters Patricia (Dann) of New Hampshire, and Janice (Sullivan) of Gloucester. | ||
