The Nikon "Small World" thread a couple of threads down got me to thinking. We all have some favorite pics that, I "assume" we'd like to share (i.e., "show off").

Let's post some of them. Rather than just let the pics lie around in the `puter, let's all have a look.

They don't necessarily have to be submarine pics.

To start things off, I'll post my current favorite. It's a "head shot" of my grand daughter. She's 5 years old. I caught her as she turned her head. she didn't expect the camera. The next moment she realized the camera was there and lit up with a big smile. I *really* like the pic. She's a "knockout" if I do say so myself. :-)

This one of my best memories of returning to port; we were headed into Charleston for some extra "ammo". The boat? Skipjack of course, my qual boat.
I had forgotten all about it until computers, BBS, and scanners came in to being. Now it's on my computer and I still have the original taken with an old Kodak "point and click" camera.

Scanners & digital are currently the best way to to keep/archive your current & old photos.

Several of the photography magazines recommend either having your old photos scanned or scanning them yourself. The paper pics will deteriorate over time, even if kept in a scrapbook. The paper will interact with the plastic and the backing on the pages.

I'm in the process of scanning all of my old prints. I have some that go back to when I was on the Boats. Once I've scanned them, I'll save them on CDs (the current technology). At some later date, they'll have to be moved to some other type of media, as CDs will eventually become obsolete.

Here's another one I like. I'm a big fan of Black and white photography. You can do a lot an be creative with lighting, shadow and composition.

Let's keep this thread going. Perhaps we can all exchange ideas and tips.

Nice photo Viejo. I left pier 22 Sirago in Feb. of '64. Was Scorpion still home based in squadron 6 then?

Also, there was another nuc that looked like Scorpion that usta park at pier 22. I guess she was a Skipjack class too. I wondering if it was the Shark. Does anyone know if it was just a visiting boat or one that was attached to S6 too. This was in '63 early '64

At that time the nucs would tie up behind the Orion or outboard her. Never alongside the pigboats. They were always  mysterious to me. One minute the pier was empty the next, there she was...I conned my way onto either the Shark or Scorpion one night. The topside watch let me below when I told him I wanted to swap movies. I got below and told the guys what we had, (which was crapola) he said forget it. Our s**t is better than your s**t. And to think I usta believe they got the best of the movies available..... Er, how the hell did I get off on this rant.

Tom,

Try joining a site such as flikr.com or photobucket. Then you can upload the pic to the site and "grab" it to paste it here on the BBS. That's what I do. Makes things a lot easier.

It has been mentioned on this board before, but a reminder wouldn't hurt. Even CD will crap out after a number of years....ask Beeghly about the failure rate. I have started copying the CDs I have burned every four years and I put the year it was reburned on the CD so I will know.

Yeah, I know, with the terrabyte network drives available now, I should probably set up two of them, one a mirror. Could be cheaper in the long run......I guess I ought to run the numbers.....

Joe, I am pretty sure it was always assigned to COMSUBRON 6 and we had another 585 clss boat in the same squadron, but I'd have to do some looking to see which one. Maybe Doc Gardner can remember if it was his or not. I always felt the FBMS got first dabs on everything, but probably a nuc had some priority over a diesel on somethings. We did have some good movies. I had a friend at an FM Radio station over in Hampton and he made lots of tapes for us to play. Yeah we tied up to the Orion and they didn't like what we wore off the boat, how we walked, they seemed to think we should be saluting all kinds of things. We were always getting yelled at, so the Navy was nice and kept us out to see for 9 months in 66 just so we wouldn't get yelled at. LOL

I think Joe is right that it was Shark; During my time on Skipjack we were always at Squadron 10 in New London; Skipjack did get transferred to Norfolk later in the 60's but I was in Viet Nam by then and then to the Roosevelt SSBN 600

The moon's orbital plane is tilted relative to our equator (just asearth's is, relative to the sun), so a full moon can rise anywhere fromthe SE to the NE. I live in the Catalina foothills area of Tucson, andthought if I drove a few miles north before sundown when the full moonrose in the NE I could get lucky as, in winter, the Santa Catalina Mountains glow withcolor in the early and late hours.

This shot was taken minutes beforesundown on Jan 21, 2008. By the time the moon was fully risen the evening colors on the mountains began to fade, so I caught the scene at its optimum in this shot. I submitted this shot to Arizona Highways photo contest last year.

That's Thimble Peak to the left of the rising moon; Thimble is near the upper reaches of the Sabino Canyon, a very popular hiking and rock climbing destination in Tucson.

On all my hundreds of trips to the "Left" Coast from here, Chasn, I've told my wife, that for near nothing west of Ft. Worth I see something different everytime. West Texas, Arizona and New Mexico have some of the most beautiful landscapes. The sunrises and sunsets are have some amazing color changes.

You're right. Went off & verified it elsewhere - dome is for the AN/BQS-2 active sonar. I never had one of those things, which had a pretty bad reputation.

I didn't take this one, but it is one of my favorites of my qual boat the Snook. I don't think too many other subs ever joined the Rebel Navy.

Hey Bill, Did the fairing behind the sail house a towed array or something else or was it just for hydrodynamics? Also I noticed on another post that you guys had the brow crossing over to the fairwater planes. Was that the SOP when you tied up?

Sean, that is part of the snorkel and diesel exhaust system. To see how it worked, go to: http://snook592.sail.to/ click on compartments and tanks, then under ships systems, click on snorkel.
I am not sure I remember all about line handling. We never were in that often to do it much, but I wonder if where you tied up made a difference. I know sometimes we would use tugs and sometime the SPM to manuver in and out. I think it may have depended on the skipper, but probably some on this board remember a lot more about that than I do. I only handled lines a few times on the Snook and doubt if I ever did on the Scorpion.
I'll tell you, yesterday on the USS Marlin, I was sure wishing we had drawings like these. There actually is a passway on the starboard side of the shaft that is too small for me to walk along, but there are several places outboard of panels that we'll have to get some kids to crawl into to get to things. So far we haven't been able to find any drawings of the compartments, tanks, or piping systems for the Mackerel class boats.

Here's one that I like. I'm a big fan of black & white photography.

Sometimes I think that you can do more with b/w than color. It's all in the composition and light and shadow.

Bill answered your first question; as to the second, Skipjacks (like all teardrop nukes except the boomers) had only 6 or 8 feet of free-board waterline to topsides, so if you moored to a pier that was 20 ft above water, a brow to the planes was a good alternative unless there was a sophisticated gangway from the pier. Otherwise returning liberty hounds would end up going over the side coming down a really steep brow!

Tom, Ansel Adams would sure agree with you. It also teaches you a lot more about those three things you mentioned as there is nothing to cover up your mistakes. Here is a catus shell sitting outside a doctor's office west of Tucson. In color it doesn't standout and show, but in black and white, you can see I should have widened the focal area. Yours has much better detail. What I need to do is program my camera, so I can go back and forth easily between B & W and color, then shoot in B & W to set the shot.

I irritate my wife all the time because I take so many pictures in B/W. I love it beyond all other photography and am a big fan of the master Mr. Adams. The Center for Creative Photography in Tucson (UofA) is the lucky recipient of most of his negatives -- he willed them. If you ever get the chance, it's worth a day-long visit (along with the Air museum, Desert museum, Boneyard at DM, etc...) From a purely entertainment value we ought to do a convention in the Old Pueblo. I know I'm going to stir up a hornets nest but some of us have wives and family that attend the conventions and want to do things other than the meetings. (Hey, I attend the meetings.)
My photos from the Alaska cruise are about 60% B/W, I'll cull some out and post them soon.

Bill,

You mentioned focal length, etc. & composition. I had to learn the relationship between shutter speed and f-stops the hard way.

My first 35mm camera was a Yashica that I bought for $125 at the Navy Exchange in Rota, Spain. It had through the lens "match needle" metering and it was a joy to use. Later it got doused with salt water and the meter never worked again. However, the camera soldiered on for several years after. I did a *lot* of experimenting with speed, f-stops, focus, composition, etc. Burned up a lot of film, too.

I've long since moved to digital, but I still like to use the manual settings on my Nikon. The great thing about digital is that I can see the results immediatly. I can also shoot a lot of pics and select the ones that I really want to use.

Here's another B&W for your enjoyment.

Tom, you are right. My first camera was a Richoh, then I had a Yashica, which is what I used to take the picture of the Scorpion in Scotland. I got used to taking so many portrait types and having fixed long length lens with 2.8 and lower speeds, that I have to stop and think about making sure that sometimes I need everything in focus. Also I miss the speed of some of my older lenses. I also liked the fact that on the older lenses, I could look on the lens and tell about how much would be in focus. Digital does a lot and is much more convenient, but I still haven't gotten a feel for it yet. I shoot most stuff in aperture preferred on all my cameras but am still trying to get used to the slower lenses and how even in long lengths some things are still in focus with the digital lens. I bought my Sony A-100 on purpose so I could use my old minolta lenses, then had to learn that they aren't the same lens in a digital camera. But it is fun and I just need to get out and shoot more. Maybe when the temperature is above zero again. I also liked the needles and then the little circle that would come and go as you got in focus. The way I learned about speeds and f stops was from an old Peterson book and it explained that you needed so much light to make a picture, so you could have a little light, small fstop number, for a longer time, or a lot of light, bigger fstop number, for a shorter time and of course the smaller fstop number made your focal distance less. I also learned to shoot in front as what was behind was more in focus and so still would be if I focused to the front. Some of this seems to apply, but it doesn't always come out like I think when shooting with a digital. But as you said, you look and then take it over again. And by the way nice picture I like the white around the grey.

My first camera was a Pentax Spotmatic f. I still have it and a great set of Takumar lenses. I bought the Canon Rebel right before the convention cruise and just love it. I really like being able to set up all the B/W settings (including filter settings) on one selection so I can quickly switch between color or B/W, as I did on many of the glacier photos.

This photo, of me, is the one I like the most.....yeah pretty vain I suppose to have one of myself but memories of a younger day.

Taken in Vancouver, 1985, age 22. about a month after initially meeting Kathy. The submarine is HMAS OXLEY.

I have shown this photo to a few fellow prison officers and most don't recognise me. Comments from the females have been..."you're friend looks cute" to "wow you were hot" ( my reply is, "I still am" lol )

Let's see if this works....

Then there is this one of Pamela taken 2-3 years ago now....down at Rockingham Foreshore.....a right little poser she is. Garden Island ( HMAS STIRLING ) in the background ......

Here's one that 's a little different. I shot it in the Hackensack (NJ) Meadows. The area is a tidal marsh conected to the Hudson River. It's also a major migratory bird area. It's part of the Eastern flyway and a resting area for many species of birds.

The shot is along the shoreline area. The foot prints are of some of the birds.

I like shooting "texture" pics. This is a pretty good example of texture.
