COMSUBBBS Posts: 2561 Location: Rapid City, SD | Subject: Sonar Elmer talks about active and passive sonar. He also mentions JP sonar. Which one is that? And what's the name of the other sonar? And what's the difference between the two? Is his kind of sonar still in use? Like he often said, "Well, you know - it's been over sixty years ago." Thanks in advance. It's been stormin' all day today. I thought maybe Gracie would be afraid of the thunder. Oh, no. It makes her angry and she talks back to it. Thunder. Bark. Thunder. Bark! Thunder. BARK! The hydrophone was coupled to the unit by means of a shaft, gear and a crank handle. Rotation of the hydrophone was strictly by man power. With the hydrophone being located topside it allowed the submarine to "hear" when sitting on the ocean floor. The sonar operators were trained to fire a special acoustic torpedo with this JP gear. Late during WWII the JP sonar was replaced with the JT version. This used a larger hydrophone and the training mechanism was improved from the manual operation to a electrical/hydraulic system. For context, here's a shot of Bowfin, off Mare Island, in 1944 ... More info (possibly more than you want!) can be found at Submarine Sonar Operator's Manual. | ||
