I was getting more confused by the minute re: the picture of the Sterlet dated 1944-45, so I called Gunners Mate Bob Barker, who served with Elmer through all five of her WWII war patrols. This is what he said: "The Sterlet NEVER had hull numbers painted on her during WWII." He asked where the 5" gun was located in the picture. I told him aft. He said that during WWII, the 5" was forward of the Conning Tower. He also said that this picture had to have been taken after Sterlet was taken out of mothballs at the beginning of the Korean conflict. So, the dates '1944-45' are in error.

So, thank you, everybody. I don't know whether to put the picture with numbers, or the picture without numbers in the book. I will explain that the picture was taken post WWII.

Thanks again,

A toast to all of you for your help. To Ric, John, Paul and Dex
