Admin Posts: 2297 Location: Renton, WA | Subject: Steamboat: Recovering nicely from heart bypass surgery. Shipmates and Friends, John "Steamboat" Fulton is one of my favorite people on the planet! He called recently asking about heart surgery since I'd experienced it. Then John said he was going down the same road. As you will all recall, he had a medical episode which he shared with us not too long ago... and this is somewhat related to that. John had surgery early this morning. John's wife Mary reports that the doc says his heart looks good and strong and he is still on the ventilator for now. He needed no transfusions and his color gets better with time. They will "wake him up" when all is well and stable. John didn't want anyone "fussing over him" prior to his surgery but now that he is on the mend, please post only here - if you have John's email, please give Mary a few days to deal with all that it going on - her job is HUGE too! Delay emails for a few days... or go ahead and send if you wish but don't expect a response for a bit. A single thread here will be very convenient for her and John. So our favorite pony soldier is doing very well but just the same, keep Steamboat in the best of your thoughts and say a few words to the big guy upstairs when you have a moment. Godspeed Steamboat... can't wait to have you back in the saddle!!!

Steamboat, Friend and Balao shipmate, Hang in there old buddy it will take more than a Yankee Surgeon swinging a saber to keep you out of the saddle. Our prayers are with you and Mary in this time of need and like the Balao sail you will return from the yards better than new. T.Spoon, DBF

Dang it, now I know why you were asking about the hog hunting out here in California last week, you needed some new parts. Sorry I let you down, I would have been proud to supply my old Balao shipmate with the needed hog heart parts. We do have some mean and nasty hogs that would gladly donated some parts.lol T.Spoon, DBF old Balao shipmate

Seriously, Steamboat, do what the doctors and nurses tell you, especially the get up and walk around part, so your recovery will go well. Best wishes.

For a "Swine of the Highest Order" one should never recommend hog parts. Only the finest of swine accoutrements will do. When you care enough to send the very best: get well John!

Master and Commander Posts: 1814 Location: Boydton, Virginia | Subject: RE: Steamboat: Recovering nicely from heart bypass surgery. John is still doing well and they took out the ventilator this morning. He is groggy but alert sometimes. He even laughs a little, but doesn't like to because it hurts. He really likes his nurse and wants to take her home with him. They will probably move him from intensive care tomorrow to a "step up" room for a day or two and then to a regular room in the cardiac unit. He won't be as spoiled in the regular room. The biggest shock to those of you who have met him is that is shaved off his beard last Monday because he wanted to avoid risk of infection. I barely knew him - thought he might be a person selling encyclopedias. The only ones who knew him were the dogs and I told him that they go by smell! Anyway, this is an ordeal, but we are fortunate they caught it before it "caught him". Mary (John's wife)

Yeah, don't make him laugh for sure I was scared of even a tickle in my throat so my favorite trick was keeping a can of diet Coke around - didn't matter if it reached room temperature... as long as it had the "fizz" it would quickly remove any "tickle" from my throat. Tell 'em to hug his heart pillow tight... it'll be his best friend for a while... about three weeks or so We love ya Johnny reb! (no beard.... we MUST have a photo of that!!!!)

Mary tell the Old Phart welcome to the Zipper Club and then watch out he's going to get better a lot faster than you think. As Don said tell him to hang onto that pillow real tight because sneezing is not a whole lot of fun but it sure lets you know you're still kicking. Nine years and counting since my surgery.

There you go, I knew it! He has already recovered although I would keep an eye out to make sure he doesn't feign illness just to go back and see the nurses! lol Nurses in uniform, now that's a lovely sight for sure! Great to hear he is doing well Mary! Blue *_*

Now I know there are some to question..a hug? Yep, ya gotta hug Steamboat so you can pin his arms to his side. If you don't he's lible to reach in your pocket looking for loose change or your wallet. Kidding of course, John. Get well soon, Shipmate. Edited by Ralph Luther 2009-07-31 9:30 AM

He is in room 453A at Riverside Hospital in Newport News,VA. John had a rough night last night and went into defibrillation twice. They were able to regulate it fairly quickly, but it was scary. He did get up and walk up the hall 4 times today. Hopefully, he will have a better night tonight. Mary

Master and Commander Posts: 1814 Location: Boydton, Virginia | Subject: RE: Steamboat: Recovering nicely from heart bypass surgery. John looked very good today and had a very restful night last night. He was up walking on his own. We saw his surgeon just before I left and the surgeon said he will probably come home tomorrow. He is really looking forward to that as he hates the hospital food! So he will be ready for you as he has been bored!

Don I concur with Don's advice. My surgery was abdominal and hugging that pillow was part of the recovery process and it sure does work. Thanks for the update and we're all looking forward to hearing that John is home and on the mend.

He is at his sister's and will rest there for several days to ready for the 3-1/2 hour drive home. I won't steal anymore thunder here as I think John may be able to throw a few posts up on the board himself before too long. Keep a'healin' Steamboat!
