Born in Dorr, MI, he served in the U.S. Submarine Service during WWII. He graduated from Bryant College in Providence, RI. During his life he owned and operated numerous businesses and was a consummate entrepreneur. Predeceased by his wife, Arline, he is survived by his loving companion, Ora Falconer of Brooksville; his son & daughter-in-law, Randall & Barbara DeVries of Largo; daughter & son-in-law, Beverly & Michael Cristina of Danielson, CT; sisters, Barbara (Swainston) Hall a& Jean Van Ess, and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Central Church of the Nazarene, G1261 West Bristol Road, Flint Township. The family will receive visitors 10 a.m. Saturday , July 24, 2010 at the church before the service, Pastor Dave Hintz officiating. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date. Since Roland was such a giving man, a donation to your favorite charity in his memory in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. Roland was born in East Lansing, MI on March 3, 1923, to Luther and Lillian Howes. He graduated from Haslett High School where he played basketball and baseball. His love of Golf was born when he worked as a caddy at Walnut Hills Golf Club in high school. He also enjoyed Michigan State hockey and was a former president of the Blue Line Club. Roland joined the Navy in 1941 and served six years in the Submarine Service and made five war patrols on two different boats, the USS WHALE and the USS Capitaine. He was a life member of U.S. Submarine Veterans, WWII and Subvets, Inc. After discharge, he attended Western Michigan University, then opened his company Howes Refrigeration Equipment Sales and Service in Mason specializing in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning. He will be greatly missed by his fiancée Vivian Nelson; daughter, Mary (James) Nye; son, James (Sarah) Howes; granddaughters, Julie (Colin) Simpson, Michaele Nye, Megan Nye, Chelsea (Marty) Whittle and Rosanne Howes; great-granddaughter, Lillian Simpson; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 57 years, Ruth, two brothers, Robert and Franklin and a sister, Jean. He was born in Jacksonville, Ill., Oct. 25, 1942, to the late Edward Merrill Cruzan of Jacksonville, Ill., and Margaret Cruzan Meyer of Hickory. Gary was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he served the Lord as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, usher, personnel committee and member of the pastoral search committee. Mr. Cruzan was retired from the United States Navy, following 20 years service as a nuclear power submariner. He achieved the rank of lieutenant. His civilian career spanned 23 years with Duke Power in Charlotte as a nuclear engineer. In addition to his father, who also retired as a naval hospital corpsman, he was preceded in death by one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred and Ann Brackett. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sharon Brackett Cruzan, as well as three loving and adoring children, Sherry and husband, Ashley Rhoney, of Lafayette, La., Senior Chief Cindy Cruzan of Washington, D.C., and one son, Garrett Edward Cruzan and wife, Debbie, of Talladega. Ala. He was also blessed with two grandchildren, Kaylan Marie and Chase Rhoney of Lafayette, La. He has one sister, Mary Dufour and husband, Fred, of Indiana. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Delene, and husband, Robert Bills, of Ballston Spa, N.Y. and Colleen and John Barron of Birmingham, N.Y; brothers-in-law, Lynn Brackett and wife, Linda, Ronald Brackett and wife, Polly, and John Brackett and wife, Bernadette, all of Connecticut; nieces and nephews, Terry and Daniel Dufour of Texas and Fred Dufour and wife, Molly, of Texas; great-nephews and nieces, Henry and Emily Dufour of Indiana and David Dufour of Texas. He has several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, Rick and Ronnie Cruzan of Jacksonville, Ill., and Jeannine of Illinois; as well as a cousin, Gary Joe Cruzan of New Jersey. There is a very special family friend, Hannah Fox Hefner. Mr. Cruzan was a member of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club for 25 years, where he served as president, vice president and secretary. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 24, 2010, at Bethlehem Baptist Church from noon until 1:45 p.m. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full military honors by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. The ship's bell will be tolled by the submarine veterans of Charlotte. Pallbearers will be Brent Fox, Chase Rhoney and members of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club. Pastors, Kenneth Little, Kenneth Lambert and Chris Meade will officiate. Alexander Funeral and Cremation Service in Taylorsville is serving the Cruzan family. - (The Daily Journal) Shirley Mark Adams Jr., 65, of Millville died Wednesday evening, July 21, 2010, at the South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Millville, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Adams graduated from Millville High School, Class of 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served six years during the Vietnam War as a machinist mate first class on the USS Grayling, Nuclear Submarine. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He then graduated from Glassboro State College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and social studies. Mr. Adams worked as a purchasing agent for Wheaton Glass Co. of Millville for 35 years and retired. He was a member of the Second United MethodistChurch in Millville.He was an avid hunter, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed. He was the best dad in the whole world. Mr. Adams is survived by his daughter, Danette Burchfield and her fiancé Anthony DelVicario of Millville; his companion, Jacqueline (Lowe) Adams of Millville; two grandchildren, Joey Burchfield and Cody Both; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Shirley M. Adams Sr. and Elvira (Norcross). Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
