Heading out to meet two guys I rode the old 481 with too many years ago than any of us like to remember, They're both in the same assisted living facility and Jack's son Bill is driving them down to the Georgia Coast (they'll make it after the hurricane passes.)

Peter, The nice thing is that I now have a truly wonderful girl friend, if you can still call a gal in her mid sixties a girl...I do because she has the enthusiasm of a fifteen year old girl and takes her bite of the apple of the apple right out of the middle. Can't help but love her because she's an "I'll try damn near everything once" type of lighthearted effervescent darlings. Couldn't ask for a lovlier person to tease and chase around a Hampton Inn bathroom and shower.

Mr, Mandelblatt and the Duchess of Durban....Thanks for your kindness. We'll just sit around drinking ice cold Miller Lite...trying to remember places, people and things we did when we were nineteen, twenty seven feet tall and bulletproof....had the world by the "short curlies" and knew we were immortal and would live forever and one day rule the world forever.

And we'll try to figure out why we short putted damn near all of our plans and ended up old stove up coots sitting around swapping silver plated cow pies and taxing our brains to remember other guys we breathed snorkle air with and bounced around in North Atlantic forty foot running sea's with.

YeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeHa

Thanks Peter and jim...for giving a damn. DEX

Life's pretty damn good when you look for and find a sweetheart like my Becky.

One thing I learned in talking with people of my age and older is when one of remembers a first name and can't remember the last name we just go on.  We use to waste most of our time trying to recall the last name when we both knew who we were talking about.

Gil, Know exactly what you mean...You get stuff like..."Hell yes, you hafta remember him, he wassa a skinny kid from just outside Belzioni Mississippi...Hiz old man owned a small country store and filling station," "Aw hell Armstrong you remember, he was the kid who got hit with the pool que in that scrap that kicked itself off in that pierhead gin mill in Montevideo...His knickname was FLAT ASS." "My God, How could we have forgotten ole whatz-hiz-name...came from Anaconda Montana and had a sister built like a brick outhouse and was a gawdam Sonar Gasket." "I don't know what in the hell his name was...I don't know if the sonuvabitch actually ever had a name. He was a damn torpedoman and everybody just called him Wooley-Booger....he even answered to Wooley-Booger at morning quarters topside." "Remember that dumbass, I C'man from Dalton Georgia. The man wuzza gawddam certifiable doofus....The bastard never qualified...too damn stupid . What in the hell wuz the kid's name?" Yeah Gil...I've played that game while at the same time leavibg overlapping concentric beer glass rings on tables in places you would never take your Mother. But, you didn't know it at the time but you were rubbing elbows with some of the finest men you would ever know, Thanks for the post...DEX

Dex, I give a damn because A) you served and rode the sub that I'm nutso over and B) I consider you up there with my dear friend Bob Perdue (who jumped with the 101st Airborne into Holland in 1944)... you all, like my father, did something that I was unable to do.. wear the uniform of this great country.

It is I who owe you thanks for serving...
