COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: Someone mentioned Lend Lease awhile back When serving back in the late 50's, early 60's my boat often put into Bermuda a Brit anchorage to which we were to be given unrestricted access under the terms of the Lend Lease agreement. Lend Lease hadn't run even half of the agreed term and the kind folks that we fed and cared for during WWII...as my skipper said," If it hadn't been for the Navy and Army Air Corps air bridge, the Bermudians would have had to resort to canibalism to support life on that small island." (remember during our Civil War, Bermuda was the warehouse complex where Southern Arms, purchased from Great Britain by Memminger's Cotton Future bonds, were put aboard blockade runners to be transhipped to locations where they would be used to devide our Union) Well, Bermudians come with short memories and by 1959, the population was angry over our presence on their island....Why? "Because all those sailors in uniform hurt our tourist image as a foriegn travel experience. American tourists want to have a foriegn travel experience and what do they get? A visit to a remote U.S. military installation crawling with uniformed U.S. sailors, airmen, and Marines....It's not fair...whine...whine...whine...bitch, moan and panty pee-peeing. There is nothing like pulling liberty in a port where you are unwanted. Especially in a location where your countryman insured the survival of that country's previous generation. So our Navy, contrary to policy in all other liberty ports...ALLOWED CIVILIAN CLOTHES ABOARD SHIPS VISITING BERMADOO....No that wasn't enough so we were kicked out of Bermuda....The outfit that gave birth to the Nevell Chamberlain PEACE IN OUR TIME horse crap, shovelled to a highly gullible public after he returned from a major Hitler butt kissing where he made a territorial access agreement that consigned innocent people to terrible German enslavement and abuse, now showed British word keeping was an empty paper bag. So we withdrew...closed our bases, naval hospital that supported the inadequate medical establishment on the island...What did we do? WE GAVE THE HOSPITAL AND EVERY DAMN THING IN IT to the government of Bermuda as a humanitarian gesture. As American sailors, you need to know that....a nation that negates solemn promises made by Churchill when he was tincupping Roosevelt for destroyers, planes...and material support....And here was Bermuda, a major benefactor of our largess reneging on the agreement before it had run half its' agreed course. Shame on them....and I would keep my mouth shut about Lend Lease Bases if I was a Brit Bluejacket. Here's the fact, we are only welcome if our presence adds to THEIR national security...not ours. In the Falkland's War, Britain offered to allow us to use Bermuda as a material supply anchorage to augment G.B.s military supply effort. God Bless our Navy who politely turned the offer down, still smarting over the bums rush we were given when asked to get the hell out. Solveig and I spent a week in Bermuda on our 35th wedding anniversary...We rented a wonderful cottage at the ferry stop at Salt Kettle, across from Hamilton....All evidence of the American military presence was GONE....completely and irrevokably GONE....Even the base flag pole we were told would remain to mark our WWII survival support of that fragile, very vulnerable island straddled directly across the German U-Boat hunting grounds. But, as I say Queen Elisabeth's subjects have extremely short memories and the flag pole got demmo'ed less than ten years after some clown in coat and tails promised its' forever presence to remind future Bermudians of their undying gratitude to the U.S.. In Bermuda "eternal gratitude" has a lifespan of about eight and a half years. Sitting out on the patio of our cottage...getting wrapped around Dark and Stormy's with our wonderful landlord....He said,"Tossing America out of here was the worst decision we ever made....We suffered a terrible economic depression that is still going on...When we lost the American Military Payroll and access to your base support...We damn near sank out of site. The void was filled by the Red Chinese who moved into the real estate you vacated and built all the massive high rise hotels that you see...they negotiated favorable tax agreements that have robbed us of badly needed revenue....and they brought in Rastafarians from the lesser nations who have lowered our level of civility and courtesy....introduced organized crime to our once crime free environment....and they brought their spray cans and have graffittied the entire island...and once again, with your requested exit we proved ourselves to be devoid of honor.....AMEN I would love to know how many British jurisdictions honored their Lend Lease agreements. No, read Kipling's poem TOMMY to get a true picture of how England honors their Service Personnel and you will see the mindset that permeates that nation's concept of national honor. Johnathon Laird wouldn't be lonely if he had lived until today. We took a royal screwing on the Lend Lease agreement...but we met our end of the bagain, to Roosevelt's credit and honor. DEX

I also remember that my family did not have any spare firearms to donate as we were living on a lot of wild game due to the ending depression. Actually. they beginning of the war in Europe was what brought us out of the depression due to manufacturing weapons of war for England. George

My Dad then Major Wesley H. He was an excellent fencer and he said it used to grate on him somewhat in having to lose to a character he could have sliced and diced faster than a Popeil Vego-matic (my terms, not his) He would have shredded Fairbanks in a real match....He was a consummate actor and gentleman.....Have you heard his recitations of Edgar Allen Poe? I love Annabel Lee..... Ya know, for a hick parochial school with a graduating class of about 45 in the middle of rural Oklahoma, we had a rich education....we had the Jose Greco Dancers, Ferrante and Teicher, Don Shirley Trio, Danny Thomas, Basil Rathbone, and probably a few more I have forgotten.....at the time, this was a boy's 4 year high school, 2 year junior college.....I was sent there because the folks gave me a choice between a Catholic boarding school or Oklahoma Military Academy. ....Hell......St. Gregory's turned out to be more like the Navy!!!!!!!!! Still, I am happy for attending there....The basis of that story can be told at a later date............ I was taught by some excellent priests who provided some real moral guidance to me in a time when I needed it......I didn't necessarily get along with all of them, but I did recognize their leadership.....One of our fellow submariners, was also a Priest in the Order of St. Benadict, but I believe Aaron Peters was in an abbey in Kansas. | Master and Commander Posts: 1576 Location: Wollongong, NSW | Subject: RE: Someone mentioned Lend Lease awhile back Dex has some interesting posts but some of the facts are slightly different. The bases are/were for a lease of 99 years. Many were voluntarily stopped but some, including Diego Garcia are still active today or the right to station forces still exists. One of the reasons that the US is not popular in many places is that too many of the visiting representatives think they have the right to act as they wish and that the dollar will take care of anything. I had many visits/stations throughout the Pacific 1970s into 1990s and I have seen good and bad. Regrettably the bad, particularly by State Department actions during that twenty year period, made the US unpopular for varying periods in PNG, Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Cook Islands. Apart from Kiribati, I was active in all of these countries and saw first hand where subsequent diplomacy had to climb many rungs of the ladder. Visiting ships and aircraft would then bear the brunt of others insensitivities. Telling sovereign states what to do is not a good way to establish healthy diplomatic relations.

COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: RE: Someone mentioned Lend Lease awhile back Roverman, I have no idea what you are referring to. I specifically addressed Bermuda and openly admitted that I had no knowledge of what had taken place at other Lend Lease obligated locations. You say the Brits obligated their nation to provide access to both facilities and support services for 99 years...OK get out your calculator and punch in 1938 and subtract that from somewhere in the 1970's....Do you come up with 99 years? I rest my case. WE NEEDED BERMUDA...Operating out of there during our war on the interdiction of sea delivered illegal narcotics, would have been a real blessing. Roverman, the Brits hosed us... With all your references to the tawdry behavior of our service personnel....The flashing around of US dollars (by the way, check out the par value of the US Dollar, that China is forced to prop up because they have so damn many of them. The big American el buckos are in the decline worldwide because of our inability to constrain our drunken sailor borrowing from foriegn nations to support this "hole in the bucket" Mid-East festering boil.) In your estimation does this give Great Britain justification to say...."I didn't say 'cross my heart and hope to die' when I kissed Roosevelt's ass while begging for those flush deck, four stack tin cans, medical supplies and munitions? Rover, that's little kiddies playground crap. In the world I grew up in, a promise was a promise...when made by nations they became sacred obligations. Nations who fail to live up to promises made on their behalf are condemned by history...Just read the history of our failure to live up to our treaty obligations with the native Americans...Shameful is an understatement. That page in our nation's history will forever resound to our discredit. Treaty obligations and agreements made between nations are totally unenforcible contracts like boyhood "let's shake on it" playing field argeements. You have to depend solely on the other fellows honor and honesty.....We shook hands with John Bull and the rapscallion picked our pocket and stole our gold watch. If I read you correctly, you seem to condone some kind of selective form of partial promise honoring....Well Dex, look at Pingo Pango...they honored that one...and we are still welcome at Bingo-Bango. It doesn't work that way...You can't roll all your financial obligations together into one whopper bank loan....then selectively decide which parts of the previous loans you are going to continue to pay down and which ones you choose to ignore. Rove, You can betcher Fruit of the Looms that any locations where the Brits are selectively choosing to live up to the handshake they had with FDR, is to their advantage. For some reason, the continued American military presence strengthens their strategic position or does something to support SOMETHING they want....our discourages their enemies at absolutely NO COST to the Brit taxpayer. Her Majesty's fine subjects in Bermuda got a bee in their collective bonnets that large numbers of the downline sailors from the generation of American redblooded bluejackets who saved their worthless butts from 39-45 were undesireable because their presence in uniform hurt their image as a foriegn country tourist experience....and gave us the heave-ho. Screw honoring a promise they made when their fannies were against the wall....However they didn't feel obligated to burp up all the food they ate while U-Boats were circling their tiny, helpless island....Nothing more worthless than a one-way promise. Rover, I never served in the Pacific...I was a North Atlantic boat sailor and pardon me for saying it, "But Diego Garcia wasn't my liberty port, so what the Brits did or didn't do never appeared on my PPI scope what they pulled off that effected MY LIBERTY PORTS effected ME and my shipmates....and unfortunately we remember how Lady Liberty tucked Great Britain under her protective skirt only to have the ungrateful bastards rip her panties off and hand them back to her. Reread my posts and I think you will find it speaks specifically to Bermuda but we all know other locations where we got the bum's rush well before the meter had run out on Lend Lease obligation. Next time they get a titty in the wringer, we need to buy the damn bases.....DEX

To quote Rover "The bases are/were for a lease of 99 years. Many were voluntarily stopped but some, including Diego Garcia are still active today or the right to station forces still exists." so did it ever enter your head that Bermuda may have been one of those leases voluntarily stopped? Next need to take you to task regarding your myoptic view on how great thou art. Never (R) Never for one minute think that Great Britain, Australia and many other countries don't realise and are eternally grateful for what the US did for us during WW II yes the US saved our collective arses and we will always remember but being grateful doesn't mean we have to like the loud mouth over bearing bombastic bastards who feel the need to regularly force what their previous generations did for us down our throats. I think Dex you might want to expand your knowledge of history outside of your cloistered little world because yes there is intelligent live outside the US borders (well maybe not Mexico) and take note that after the US saved our arse in WW II we have mustered up and attended every one of the s**tty little wars that the US has got itself involved in since. Our troops (British, Australian, New Zealand, Gurkhas etc etc) are living and dying in the same s**t holes your boys and girls are dying in and in my mind that shows real gratitude. In short as I posted the other day "Get over yourself" and I'll try to take my own advice.

COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: RE: Someone mentioned Lend Lease awhile back Peter, Please reread my posts. It never occurred to me to consider that our departure was voluntary because (A) It wasn't (B) We desperately NEEDED the anchorage so strategically located off our coast. We tried to negotiate a more gradual departure. (C) The ghaddam paper was contantly loaded with variations on the YANKEE GO HOME theme (D) There are retired high ranking US Naval officers who still have a case of major heartburn over the way we were shown the door Next, No one has more respect for the ANZAC Forces than I do...Even to understanding the resentment during the War of our forces operating out of Australia and New Zealand while your fellows were slogging it out in North Africa and elsewhere. The Aussies and Kiwis carried the burden and commitment for Victory, per capita than any other nation.....And what Chruchill threw you into a Gallipoli will forever stand as a perfect example of sublime stupidity that no troops could have handled better. I just got damn fed up, with your shipmate constantly siding with any sonuvabitch who disagreed with me....never complimentary always carping. Then this other clown shows up and starts lecturing me on the history of where I grew up...both poking their outsider noses in US Sailor business and offering BS opinions. Then Jaybird #2 starts in with how Great Britain so generously gave us access to her strategically located anchorages and refit facilities and I could no longer sit by and let crap like that pass. both have been silent because there is no way to defend what Great Britain did. I didn't bring the subject up....I didn't raise the subject of Great Britain's attempt to divide this nation by giving material support to the Southern States that in all probability prolonged the conflict and caused many more American casualties....maybe we should have supplied arms and material support to the Zulus, Fuzzy Wuzzies, Hindus, and the Canadian Indians....I sure as hell didn't bring up the subject of lend lease and what a great benefactor Great Britain was. Peter at some point you go into "outsider meddling bulls**t overload" and I reached that point....I have never understood why Blue decided to crawl diown my stack at every opportunity available...My wife and I considered him to be a friend...He's a weak fellow who goes along with the mob...and is a great backshooter. I would honor such a request...and have with others. Let's get this straight. I love the ANZACs Always have...that's precisely why Blue ended up under this roof. I often visited the ANZAC CORRIDOR at the Pentagon which is a trerrific tribute to Australian and New Zealand's contribution to Victory in WWII. In conclusion, Why would the United States voluntarily give up access to Brit military facilities globally? It doesn't make sense. I remember being told once that we made far too much use of Gibbo after transiting the Atlantic and entering the Med....we bought food and fuel for much needed funds to feed a struggling economy. When we pulled out of Bermadoo and took our military payrolls purchasing power with us their economy tanked...bigtime. Peter, you have ALWAYS been a household word in this family. My bride loved you and Blue and that's a fact. I don't know why our friendship (ours and Blues) went South but it has because he's become a part of every lynch mob that tuirns up on my doorstep. I have never çonstantly sided with anyone who had a go at you. I have disagreed with you on quite a few posts. Does that mean I am such a bad guy? No, it means I have, and am entitled to an opinion, just as you are. I have agreed with you on many a post, but you obviously are failing to recognise that. Is there some hidden agenda here I ask? Point 2. You ask "I don't know why our friendship went South" Well Dex, I do. I know EXACTLY when it went south. It was when you asked for opinions ( without dictating who could or couldn't respond ) to a question you had about the Holland Club. It was something to do with an idea of yours regarding Gold chairs or was it tables? for the Holland Club Members. I gave a POLITE opinion, stating I didn't think it was necessary. That is ALL I did, offer an opinion. You asked your 'Shipmates' for an opinion, and to be completely honest, I actually thought I was one. Sadly, it turned out, I wasn't. I was just a furriner with an opinion that wasn't wanted by you. No other American on here, expressed to me that I was wrong and that I wasn't allowed to have an 'opinion'...just you. You also did it in an extremely hostile manner, which naturally, got me a tad upset with YOU. That Dex, is exactly where it went 'south'. Because I had the audacity to offer an opinion, and one that you didn't agree with. You obviously never heard me say to any of the guys I was with on this trip I just took part in, but for what it is worth, I told them that I AM upset that you have taken this stance with me as I thoroughly enjoyed your friendship, hospitality in the past. I have lovely memories of Solveig and you from back in 2004. The fact that you went south on me is not something I am happy about. I don't lay awake at night stressing it, but it's not what I am about. I have slagged you off in return because that is all you seem to enjoy, thats how it appears, to me at least. Now, you can take any of the above as you like, but to me, it's a hand stretched out for that friendship we once had. You don't want it? That's your choice and as we say down this way...."Such is Life"! I said a month back that Solveig would slap you for what you have done, I was wrong, she would slap the two of us! COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: For Mr. Blue First To show what a silly fellow you are, You have the audacity to tell me, what a woman you knew for less than four days would do, when I lived with her for forty plus years and closed her eyes. That's what it means to be a total imbecile. Why things went South is immaterial. Suffice it to say, they did...it did...or the whole thing did. Now, Is it asking too much for you to excercise the personal self control, I have and just simply stay the hell away from your back shooting stuff I write. I can accept criticism from the men who wore the same uniform I did...rode the boats I banged tanks with in nests of US boats...and left beer glass rings on tables in faraway places with. Sure, I can exchange cowpies with guys who wore the same make of Dolphins I wore, ate the same chow and saluted the same flag. I have a problem with men who did none of that, sticking an unwanted nose into a strictly US boatsailors round robin. I have done my damndest to make that clear to you and by now damn near everyone on the planet knows that (and that should include you). What does it take for you to accept that and simply refrain from sharing your overseas wisdom with me? Simply doing what I do to your posts...just not open them...and save us both gastric distress. Most gentlemen I know would accept that, move on and honor the request. And in so doing bring peace to the barnyard. It's a simple request....I don't read your stuff and you never find me sniping at your stuff...all I ask is a little reciprocal courtesy. Now for your comments on what my beloved Solveig would have done...Let me fill you in, Horsefly...First she would have been dumbfounded that a man she fed...changed his bedlinnen...provided pick-up and bus station delivery services for and shared her freely given hospitality to....turned out to be such an ungrateful freeloader. That Mr. Expert on my Wife, is exactly what she would say....And yes, she would be confused by your reluctance to keep your distance and your perverse insistance in insinuating yourself in places you know will cause continual dust-ups. Those are the thoughts that would have bothered her. As for being disappointed in me....Oddly enough those times were extremely few and far between and I hope this doesn't rock your arrogant world, but she might have been disappointed with the way you turned out but would have stood by my side as she did for our 40 wonderful years....and she would have been disappointed in your comment ascribing thoughts and putting words in her mouth after she was dead and no longer able to refute your BS.... Again I ask you man-to-man how about severing all ties between us, refrain from engaging in anything I write about US boatservice issues that should belong between US phin brothers and not open to outsiders, who have zero experience wearing our canvas, rubbing shoulders on our messdecks, watching our dead mates go over the side, sharing coffee and smokes on the bridge with, drying foulweather gear over engine covers coming off watch together, and bouncing around and off each other in heavy weather. I'm sure you must have had mates that you did all that with....I would never under any circumstance interject an opinion on ANY issue you raised about your Aussie Sub Service. Why? Two reasons, a difference in the way the two of us were raised and second, because I don't know a damn thing about the Australian Submarine Service and certainly not enough to have an opinion on any subject pertaining to it. Once again, if you still want to continue this stupid sparing instead of simply honoring my repeated requests to "go away", I'm at your service. A while back Don Gentry, who is one of your many admirers and a true friend of us both, asked me to find some kind of common ground to bury the hatchet, shake hands and quit swapping horsecrap. There is nobody riding this wonderful magic carpet he invented, that respects and honors Don more than me...So I told him I was willing to try. You were out west somewhere and niether of us knew how to link up with you. I have no idea how you did it, but within a week you gut punched me over something I had posted and that opportunity vanished in smoke. You need to give Don credit for a well meaning attempt...He's a man of a rare breed and universally respected. Well enough of this, I hope you can find whatever it takes in Australia to honor my sincere request. R.D. Armstrong
