CHURCH, Richard O., 79, died June 8, 2007, in his home in Womelsdorf. His wife, Barbara J. (Schildt) Church, died May 13, 2007. Born in Toronto, Ohio, he was a son of the late Dr. Harold H. and Olive (Oswald) Church. He was a patent attorney and a member of the Berks County Bar Association for many years. Dick was a 1948 graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and earned his law degree from Indiana University in 1951. He served on the carrier Midway and the submarine USS Senate as a Navy officer during the Korean War. Surviving are a son, Robert F., wife of Ann (Rowe); three grandchildren in California; and his adopted sons, Joseph, Womelsdorf, and Robert, Orlando, Fla. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. James (Marie) Work, Elkhart, Ind., and Mrs. Melba Fisher, East Lansing, Mich. He was predeceased by his son, Peter. Services were private. Hetrick Funeral Home, Womelsdorf, was in charge of arrangements.


KOVACS, Daniel Alexander, 20, of Lake Havasu, AZ., Electronics Technician with the U.S. Navy, passed away June 10, 2007 in Oahu, HI., of natural causes. He was born July 17, 1986 in Riverside to Karen and Alex kovacs. He moved with his family to LHC, graduating from LHHS in 1996. An excellent student, member of the Renaissance Gold Club and President of the Skills USA (VICA). He enjoyed shooting, sand railing, golfing and BBQ's. He enjoyed life. Danny joined the Navy in 2003 and spent his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Command in Chicago. He went on to the Nuclear Propulsion Training Command in Charleston, SC., graduating with honors. After advancement to ET3 in 2005, he went on to NNPTU in Balllston Spa, NY. His final assignment was to the USS Columbus (SSN 762) in Bremerton, WA., remaining until the submarine was deployed to Pearl Harbor, HI., He was advanced to 2nd Class Petty Ofcr., (ET2), obtaining his Nuclear Reactor Operator's Qualification. His medals included the National Defense Serv., Marksman Rifle and GWOT. Daniel will be awarded submarine dolphins posthumously, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals during a Memorial Service in Pearl Harbor, HI., Wednesday, June 20, 2007. Services are scheduled for Friday, June 22, 2007 at 12 p.m. at the Arlington Mortuary Chapel, 9645 Magnolia Ave., Riverside. Burial will follow at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., with full Military Honors. A celebration of his life will follow at John and Gina Michael's home in Corona, CA. Danny is survived by his parents, Karen and Alex; brother, Kenny; grandparents, Sandor and Lyvia Kovacs of Fullerton, and Donald and Evelyn Michael of Redding; many aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers and his beloved lizard, Dottie. An outstanding young man, Danny will be sorely missed by all. Donations in Danny's name may be made to the Lake Havasu Sportsman's Club at SARA Park in LHC, AZ., (928) 453-5404


REED, John R., 65, died at his home in Newport News, Va. on June 13, 2007, after a long and brave battle with bone cancer. A native of Auburn, Jack was one of three sons of Raymond and Dorthea Reed. He graduated from West High School in 1959 and entered the U.S. Naval Academy under a Congressional appointment. Jack, a gifted athlete and member of the varsity tennis team, graduated as a member of the 20th Company. He was known to many as "Jake" and to all for his contagious friendliness and good humor. After graduation, he married his long-time sweetheart, Linda Squire of Auburn. Jack entered the Naval Nuclear Power Program directly following graduation, first qualifying in USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN-617), and then serving as Weapons Officer in USS Lafayette (SSBN-616) until leaving active duty in 1969. A bright business life began with Jack"s employment at IBM Component Division in NY. In 1973 he began new marketing responsibilities at IBM Federal Systems Division, Manassas, VA. In that capacity he gave memorable support to the U.S. Navy in operational transformation of the submarine force to digital combat systems. Further IBM executive assignments followed as Marketing Manager and Administrator for Business Development. In 1981 he joined ENSCO Corp as Vice President, then started his own company, JCN, in 1985. For many years thereafter he provided valued consultation to Navy and commercial projects. Jack was a business visionary, and in Alexandria, Va. started a successful laser printer service business, AMERICOMP, in 1989 when this was a new technology. He remained active in the business community after moving to Amelia Island, Fla. in 1997 where he resided for ten years. Jack served his country and community in many volunteer capacities over the years, as U.S. Navy reserve officer, coach, mentor and go to guy. He served for a number of years on the board of USNA 63 Foundation. On Amelia Island he was a member of St. Michael"s Catholic Church, and was actively involved with the Big Brothers Program of NE Florida. Jack is survived by his lifetime sweetheart and his wife of 44 years, Linda, of Newport News, VA; son John Reed and wife Kim of Fredericksburg, Va.; son Christopher Reed of Richmond, Va.; four step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren; brother Robert Reed of Auburn; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel in Newport News, Va. with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606. Yeah, really. How does a 20 year-old kid die of "natural causes"?

I thought they did away with that cause-of-death years ago, along with "old age".

Richard O. Church was a LTjg onboard USS Sennet SS-408 during the years 1954-1955.
