At random: Dollar for dollar and man for man, the submarine is the country's most economical weapon. Comprising only 1.6 percent of the Navy's World War II personnel, the submarine service accounted for 55 percent of all enemy shipping destroyed.

One of those days you never forget where you were.
I was still in High School when the President was shot and killed.

I had already completed my 2 tours in the USN. I was employed at a dirt burner power plant as a boiler room helper (read oiler). Received a phone call to tell me the news. A definite shock to everyone. In reflection, Kennedy was a lot better thought of then than now. Probably due to the shenanigans of the Kennedy family since his death.
As I recall the military people as a general rule didn't much care for the "JFKs" inspired by someone who couldn't negotiate an after battery hatch ladder unassisted.
All in all, too bad a president of the United States could/would be knocked off with still ongoing BS as to who or why after 52 years!

Aboard USS Atule in drydock, NNSY. Some of the crew drove up to DC to witness funeral procession. Wish I had done same.

I was going to junior college and working three hours a day in a company sweeping the floors three hours a day for a $1.10 an hour.  My only ambition was get a job that paid $2.50 so I could make three digits a week.  The office secretary comes into my area through the shipping dock with the sun behind her.  I could see through her thin dress and she tells me our president is dead.  By far the most significant current news event I can remember.

USS Sirago SS485 was tied outboard a tin can in Karachi, Pakistan, the armpit of the world when word was passed over the 1MC late that nite about the shooting of JFK. Did not hear he was dead until the next day. Very sad. I liked him very much.

Like everyone else here and around the world I know exactly where I was on that fateful day. I was in the engine room of HMS Olympus, up to my elbows in sludge fixing a failed oil/water separator when I heard the terrible sad news.

Although he was America's President, I think that most young people in the Western world welcomed a younger vibrant man at the helm of one of the worlds superpowers'. Like most politicians at that time he had served in the military as a junior officer with a healthy contempt for the upper brass. He proved his pragmatism by ignoring the military hawks who wanted nuclear war and after 13 scary days he faced down Krushev who blinked first by withdrawing his missiles from Cuba. I never bought into the concept of Camelot but I believed that his presidency was heralding in a brave new world order.

I admired Kennedy despite his detractors who focused on his womanising ways rather than his leadership abilities. Whatever went on behind closed bedroom doors did not detract from him making bold and positive decisions that alienated organised crime and anti-civil rights groups in the process. So hard to believe that 50 years later we are none the wiser as to the individuals or the group responsible for his murder. Only the rumours and conspiracy theories remain while justice itself has never been served.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was handled properly. I'm on the flip side of all the rest of you concerning the man.
