That sure is different than when I was there (1960-1965).

You bet it's different. Compared to now we seem to have been living in low end housing on base. We had cubes with nothing but a locker on the upper base. A couple geedunk machines and a ping pong table. The FBM barracks are what I'm referring to and you can see it in the 2nd photo. The guys who made the Nick & Angie's runs kept us in touch with outside world chow. At least the barracks on the upper base were plush compared to lower base. I still hate those cammies and always will.

Didn't have cubes back then, Tom. It was a completely open floor with rows of bunk beds.

Open deck with rows of bunk beds and lockers. Wow love those dorm style rooms. But where's the bar?

Same here. Military style barracks and lockers, no dorm rooms. You ate in the chow hall at the bottom of the stairs. Showers had a dozen shower heads and... "don't drop the soap!"

Am I the only one who noticed they got the number of submariners lost in WWII wrong?
It's not 500 but about 3,500.

I noticed the lost submariners count as well.  I think the "3" got dropped in the article and no one proofing it caught the error.

Wonder about Rock Pond, those long set of steps up to the Enlisted and Acey-Ducy club. That bunch of folks running those steps chanting "Wanna Be, Gotta Be, Diver, Diver, Diver." Then there was the Sub Bar and the Pawn Shop right near it that sold Class III weapons. At least those are things I remember.

When I was on the 657, we were home ported in New London

We had a boat reunion in New London some years back - we got the grand tour of all the new facilities and the USS Providence.

It sure has changed.

Even the small arms range is all electronic simulations and does not use ammo.

My thoughts; unless there's a smell of burned gunpowder, a loud BANG and a healthy kick, firing on an electronic range is akin to what it must be like making love to a blow-up doll. You go through all the motions and work up a sweat but when you're done, you have that nagging feeling there's just something missing.

Qualified on the .45 on that range. The range masters hated me the first few shots. I was blowing frame of the target next to mine to pieces until I learned to hang on to the puppy!!!

Remember we had to do the blow and glow on a regular basis. I think annually but could be wrong here. When the tower burned and was OOC we did the blow and go in Rock Lake at the end of the dock. Water maybe 5-6ft deep if that. What a thrill in March. Speaking of the divers training, pretty sure the candidates had to carry a large log to the mess hall every morning doing the chant. Or could it been UDT training?
