BONSEY, John William, Sr., 91, died Nov. 22, 2015. Born in Philadelphia, PA on Jan. 23, 1924, John was a man of many talents who wore many hats. He served in the United States Navy Submarine Service during World War II, and also became a standout fighter on the U.S. Navy boxing team. He qualified in submarines in USS O-10 (SS-71) in 1944 and was MoMM2(SS) when released from active duty in 1945. Prior to the war, he excelled in the ring as the New Jersey light-heavyweight boxing champion (under the name of Johnny Langly, so his mother wouldn't find out he was boxing) and would have continued his promising career after leaving the Navy if he hadn't suffered a serious concussion. John eventually became a fighter for his community in Pinellas County. As Chairman of the County Commission in the 1960s, he played a significant role in developing many Pinellas County parks and recreational services, and helped lay the groundwork for the Bayway to Fort DeSoto and the bridges connecting Treasure Island and St. Petersburg. In addition, John helped take care of the less fortunate with his involvement in the mental health clinics in Pinellas County, including PARC and the Adult Mental Health Clinic, and helped establish the Pinellas County Juvenile Detention Center, regarded as one of the top juvenile detention centers in the state. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, YMCA, SPCA, Community Welfare Council, Chamber of Commerce, State of Florida and St. Petersburg Council on Crime Prevention. He also was a real estate broker, a stockbroker for AG Edwards, President of Gorman Builders, and Chairman and President of B&B Manufacturing. John had a passion for restoring cars, including his Model T and 1960 Jaguar convertible. He used an old Singer sewing machine to do the upholstery himself! He joined his son, Jim, in starting a popular St. Petersburg car repair business, JB Automotive. As a side pursuit, he loved helping Jim work on the racing cars he built for his racing company, Sidewinder Racing. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, John was the son of Louis and Mary Bonsey. He was predeceased by his son, Jim, in 2010; and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Baily Bonsey; sister, Mary Driscoll; his sons, John Jr., David and Daniel; daughters, Brenda Shiflett, Diane Caronongan (Bobby); daughter-in-law, Debi Bonsey Spriggs; granddaughters, Victoria Jiencke, Amy Freda, Leah Bonsey, Angela Tribou, Nicole Moss, Amber Ford, Jeani Shwartz, Kelly Hawkins, Michelle Adams, and Dawnese Hawkins; and 17 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, MLK, Thursday, Dec. 3, from 5-8 pm. Funeral Mass at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, on Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 am, followed by internment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
