At random: Dollar for dollar and man for man, the submarine is the country's most economical weapon. Comprising only 1.6 percent of the Navy's World War II personnel, the submarine service accounted for 55 percent of all enemy shipping destroyed.

It is my sad duty to let you know that Ken "Tank" Young has passed away. Ken was one of the more notable characters on the Greenfish, from 1959 to1962. With a happy can-do attitude, he was the consummate Auxiliaryman, and was called on to fix all sorts of problems.

While on a very sensitive Special Ops run, the snorkel head valve jammed shut, In the middle of the pacific Ocean, at night, Captain Davis called on Tank to climb up to the head valve and see if he could remedy the situation. It was essential for Greenfish to snorkel, or return to base lame. Tank pried on the valve and blocked it open to Davis's satisfaction. Snorkeling resumed, with very acute depth control and Greenfish was awarded a Special Commendation for a successful operation. Along with others, Tank was awarded a Special Commendation from Davis.

Tank rode a BSA 500 cc Gold Star motorcycle, hot stuff! But, bikes were not allowed on the sub base. So when Tank needed to repair his bike, he walked it through the gate and to the boat. When the roving guard told him it was not allowed on the base, Tank wheeled it over the gangplank, on board and over the engine rooms. The guard just shook his head and left. Such was the stuff of Tank Young!

Tank passed away March 31, 2016 at the Fresno Regional Medical Center due to complications from a fall. He was born in Wichita, Kansas to Clarence Everett 'Pat' Young and Irene Walker, Ken was employed as truck driver at age 16 prior to spending 20 years in the navy. He spent many years at Mare Island Naval Ship Yard where he met and married his wife Mary D. Harris, spending 43 years wonderful years together. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Mary, along with children Janine Higgins and husband Bill, Dana and husband David, Bill Murray and wife Lori, Ron Prewitt and wife Jeanie, Randy Prewitt and wife Heidi, Linda Prewitt, Steve Pimentel and wife Helen, Kathe Navarro and husband Gilbert, Ken cherished his 16 Grandchildren, his 11 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on May 21, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the Madera Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 520 North N St., Madera, CA 93637. A Celebration of his life with refreshments will be held at the home of Kathe and Gilbert Navarro (step-daughter) 9045 E. Shaw Ave. in Clovis, CA 93619 following the service. His internment will be at the Solano County national Cemetery in Dixon, California.
With great respect,
Jim Kyser
