VERNIZZI, Ernest, 84, resident of Walnut Creek, passed away peacefully in his home on July 29, 2007, four months after losing his wife, Gina Matarazzo Vernizzi. He and Gina celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Ernest was born in Padova, Italy on April 6, 1923. He is survived by his children, Anna Chance, Christine Armstrong and Mario Vernizzi, his grandchildren, Nolan, Joanna, Matthew, Gregory, Elizabeth, Sarah and Emily; as well as 6 brothers and sisters all of whom still reside in Italy. Ernest came to the United States as an Italian POW. He was a sonar operator on the Italian submarine, Tritone, which participated in operations against the Allied ships in Algerian ports as part of the North African campaign during World War II. His submarine was sunk by gunfire off the coast of Bougie on January 19, 1943. Taken prisoner of war by the Americans, he spent 2 years in POW camps across the United States. During his internment in Oakland at Camp Knight, he met his future wife, Gina. Ernest participated in various Italian clubs in the Bay Area including the Fratellanza Club in Oakland, and volunteered for the St Vincent De Paul Society. After retiring from his Monterey Liquor store partnership, he had time to travel with his wife and family. Palm Desert was a special destination and golf became a favorite pastime, which he enjoyed with his sons-in-law and grandsons. He was an avid fisherman in his younger days. Gardening, however, was his true passion. He spent many hours cultivating his flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables - the bounty of which his family and friends benefited from. Ernest had gusto for life and a colorful personality. He enjoyed the company of family, friends and neighbors, all of whom affectionately appreciated his kind deeds and warm personality. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Donations in Ernest's memory may be made to Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Ave., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523, the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
