At random: "I don't know why we have to be down here on this hold down exercise(at the 60th hour). Hell, I went through this on the Thresher (SS 200) during WW ll with a Nip Sea Going Tug hooked onto our screw guards, trying to lift our butts out of the water. They didn't get us then, and these Tin Cans (ours) ain't going to get us now." -- "Hambone" Hamilton SD1 (SS). "Hambone" made 13 war patrols on USS Remora, SS-487, uttered these words in July 1957 during a hold down exercise off Kobe Japan.

Joe.
Did you know a Mustang on Sirago, when I knew him he was Lt. Vic Peters on the Pickerel.  He had come off of Sirago to the Pickerel.  I think he attended all their reunions.  He was the most admired officer I ever served with.  He could have played the Burt Lancaster role in Run Silent Run Deep.

Gil, I knew Vic from WestPac when I was in Gudgeon. I think either in Subic or Yoko. Dick Helm went from us to Pickerel

Mr. Peters was with us in Westpac 1/68, and Dick Helm came on board about  12/68 a few weeks after my discharge when the Boat was in dry dock at Hunters Point. My buddy that joined the Navy when I did went to the Wahoo or Gudgeon, his name was Bob Kingery, and I lost all contact with him when we got out.  I never met Dick, but I kept in contact with him as he was trying to make a crew's list that he never completed maybe six or eight years ago.

Mr. Peters and Dick came to the Pickerel reunion  in K.C. (I did not), and I kept in contact with him for a while.  He owned a company in Washington (state) involved in nuclear energy at the time.

Nobody could trim the Pickerel as quickly as Mr. Peters could.  I had more confidence with him in the Conn than the skipper.

I checked the listing I have for all our crew that ever served on Sirago, TAD or otherwise and we only have a Bernard Peters listed...it showed him as a Cdr and CO of Sirago in the late '50's...

No, his name was Vic Peters.  Maybe CRS has a bigger hold on me than I thought?  He sent me a message that he retired 1/09, but not sure from where.
