HOLMAN, Arthur David, 77, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on March 16, 2017, at his home in Island Falls. He was born on December 6, 1939, in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, to Horace and Alice (Riley) Holman. Art grew up in North Stonington, CT, and graduated from Wheeler High School. Upon graduation he joined the US Navy and served as a submariner on the USS Grampus. Following his military service he attended Mitchell College in New London, CT. He worked for 15 years at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT, and became a Master Machinist. In the early 1970's he followed his dream to become an organic farmer and moved with his family to northern Maine, settling on a beautiful farm overlooking Mt. Katahdin. His love of the outdoors then led him to become a Maine Forest Ranger, where he worked for many years until his retirement. Art married Ann E. (Wagner) on December 19, 1959, in Westerly, R.I. They were lovingly devoted to each other for 57 years. He was a member of the Island Falls United Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, choir member, Sunday school teacher and youth leader. He especially loved music and singing. His love of farming and gardening led to his immense passion for tractors and their history. Art is survived by his wife Ann of Island Falls; son, Kurt Holman and his wife, Sheila of Ashaway, R.I.; their three children, Joshua Holman and his wife, Kylee and their daughter, Annabeth; Jonathan Holman and his wife, Charlotte and their sons Elijah and Matthias; Brittany Thorpe and her husband, Spencer and their daughter Lauren; his son, Greig Holman and his wife, Cheryl of Middlesex, NY; their four children, Jeffrey Holman, Gretchen Spaid and her husband, Jacob, Andrew Holman and Sumana Holman; his siblings, John Holman and his wife, BettyAnne, Marilyn Kenyon and her husband, Roger, Bob Holman and his wife, Linda, Richard Holman and his wife, Cathy and Nancy Hansen as well as numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. He was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Alice (Riley) Holman, and brother-in-law Richard Hansen. The family expresses great appreciation for the excellent and compassionate care Art received from the Visiting Nurses of Aroostook and Hospice care team, as well as his doctors and care providers at Cancer Care in Brewer and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Additionally the family is grateful to the staff of Sarah's House of Maine, who offered tremendous support and provided wonderful accommodations during Art's course of treatment. A memorial service will be held at a future date to be determined. PRITZ, Thomas Richard, Sr., 92, died peacefully on March 16, 2017 in Boynton Beach, Florida. Tom was born on April 26, 1924, to Eric M. and Marie Devine Pritz. He spent his youth in Rockford, Illinois, and attended Rockford College and Oklahoma A&M University, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega service and leadership fraternity. After serving in the U.S. Navy Submarine Corp from 1943 to 1946, he met the love of his life, Molly LaTier Manuell. They married in 1950. Shortly after settling in Grand Rapids, Tom was recalled and served in the Navy again from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Panama. Upon returning to Grand Rapids and beginning a family, Tom worked at several jobs in the area before ultimately establishing a career at Lear Siegler Corporation/Smith Industries as a Logistics Engineer. Tom was a devoted husband and an active father. His love for his family serves as a treasured memory and inspiration to his children and those who knew him. The simple pleasures always drew his greatest admiration. A beautiful sunset, a beautiful story, a storm, or a well-mixed Manhattan up with a little cherry juice could bring tears of appreciation or laughter. He had a dry and quirky sense of humor. Tom also loved a good book and a game of cards with competent players. Tom and Molly always enjoyed the Florida Keys. He spent the last six years of his life enjoying the Florida sunshine and living close to his daughter and son-in-law. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Police Senior volunteers, Kiwanis Golden K, the Jaycee Toastmasters Club, the Men's Club and the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church. Tom is survived by his children, Polly (Mark) Tillman, Maryann (Mike) Anusbigian, Thom (Jane) Pritz, Jr., Eric (Alison) Pritz, and siblings John Pritz, Catherine Cunningham, and Patricia Hobart; his grandchildren Amanda, Luke, Peter, Taylor, Nick, Hannah, Tom III, Alex, Theo, and Molly; his great-grandchildren Erin, Pearl, Ben, Seth, Grace, Preston, Bryce, and Noah. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Molly Manuell Pritz, and his sister, Mariem Pritz Neimeyer. A communion and memorial service is scheduled at 2 pm Saturday, March 25th, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1815 Hall St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506 with a reception to follow at the church. BRISTOW William Melton, M.D.,, CAPT, USN, MC, Ret., 85, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017. He was 85 years old. Dr. Bristow was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Columbia, SC, a son of Walter James and Caroline Melton Bristow. He attended The Citadel, the University of South Carolina (B.S., 1952), the Medical University of South Carolina (M.D., 1956), the University of Texas Medical College Hospital (his first assignment after receiving his commission in the U.S. Navy), the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), U.S. Naval Submarine School (1960), U.S. Navy Diving School (1960) and the University of California, Los Angeles (MPH, 1963). Because of his expertise in epidemiology, in 1964 he was assigned to work on top secret U.S. naval projects involving atomic, biological and chemical warfare defense. He received several commendations for his work in the field. He also volunteered for service in two of the most elite branches of the military - the Navy SEALs and as an officer of a nuclear submarine. Dr. Bristow was involved in the establishment of the U.S. Navy SEAL teams and was appointed to be their first medical officer in 1962. He received the Combat Action Medal while serving with the SEALs in Vietnam, one of the first medical officers to receive this decoration. In 1965, while on assignment with NATO forces in Europe, he was assigned to the Mohammad V Hospital in Meknes, Morocco, during a meningitis outbreak. He received a letter of commendation from H.M. the King of Morocco, the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Navy for his accomplishments in fighting infectious diseases. On that same deployment, he discovered an ancient Phoenician shipwreck while searching for downed aircraft off the coast of Malta. He was assigned to work on nuclear submarines and supervised the first chamber lockouts from a nuclear submarine aboard the USS Whale in 1969 in his capacity as the diving and nuclear submarine medical officer. He rose to become squadron medical officer and flotilla medical officer. At the time of his promotion to captain in 1970, he was the youngest active-service officer in the Navy to hold that rank. He visited more than 100 countries before retiring from 30 years of service in 1979. Thereafter, Dr. Bristow was in private practice in the San Diego area, working in general, occupational and internal medicine. In his spare time, he managed a network of real estate holdings. Dr. Bristow was published in numerous medical journals and classified Department of Defense publications. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Pan-American Medical Association, the American Board of General Preventive Medicine, and the Association of Military Surgeons. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed skiing and playing bridge. He was a champion wrestler at The Citadel and was part of the 1960 11th Naval District championship team. Dr. Bristow is survived by his cherished companion Anne Hoiberg; sister Caroline Bristow Marchant; sister-in-law Stewart Mullins Bristow; nephews Dr. Walter James Bristow III (Anne), Dr. T. Eston Marchant III, and Judge Bristow Marchant (Elizabeth); nieces Caroline Marchant Borucki (Robert) and Nancy Marchant Harris (Gregory); and great nieces and nephews Abbot Land Bristow Brummett (Jordan), Walter James Bristow IV, Dr. Katherine Stewart Bristow Patrick (Richard), William Melton Bristow II, Walter Bristow Marchant Jr., Madison Eston Marchant, Dr. Sallie Gilmore Marchant, Robert Bruce Borucki Jr., Davis Marchant Borucki, Evelyn Ann Borucki, Caroline Lila Harris, Brittain Anne Harris, and Marchant Elizabeth Harris. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Judge Walter James Bristow Jr. Dr. Bristow requested that no funeral be held, only a toast in his memory at your next gathering. He will be buried privately in a military cemetery in California. QUILLEN, Randy, was born on November 29, 1971 and passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017. Randy was a resident of Woodbine, Georgia at the time of his passing. A 1990 graduate of Volunteer High School, he joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation and was stationed aboard the USS Tennessee, a ballistic missile submarine.


YARGER, Jesse Francis, passed unexpectedly on March 17, 2017. Jesse was born July 22, 1932, in Bloomington, IL. Preceding him in death were his mother Sybilla, father Jesse E., former wife Marilyn (Zook), and brothers in-law Donald and Russell Zook. He leaves his wife Patty of 34 years, daughter Sarah J. Allen, sister Judy Johnson, brother Jim Yarger (Karen), brother-in-law Robert Zook (Linda), stepchildren Mike Meskimen (Winny), Carrie Munyan (Russell), Jennifer Meskimen, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. After high school, Jesse joined the US Navy and served in the Korean War. He was a submariner serving on the USS Barb, USS Archerfish, and USS Sennet. Following discharge, he returned to the telephone industry. He moved to Fort Myers in 1960 and was employed for over 33 years with United Telephone (Sprint), retiring in 1993. Jesse's passions were his family, restoring vintage cars, and activity in the Porsche Club of America in which he was a national award winner and served as a national judge. Upon retiring, he worked part time for a private automobile collection in Naples, FL where he remained for 29 years. He became a sought-after docent at the Rev's Institute. He was a member of the Church of the Cross and served on the ushering team. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 25th at 2:00pm at the Church of the Cross, 13500 Freshman Lane, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Reception following the service. GOTTSCHALK, Arthur William, Jr., CAPT, USN, Ret., formerly of New Bern, NC, left us peacefully on March 8, 2017, in San Jose, CA, after a protracted struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, D. Patricia Gottschalk (Schach), to whom he had been married since 1951. Additional surviving family include his son, Arthur William Gottschalk, III; three daughters, Kathryn Voss, Nancy Roberts, and Sally Marquis; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Art, born and raised in Detroit, MI, attended and graduated from the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Art then served his country for 30 years in the US Navy as both a Surface Warfare Officer and a Submarine Officer. Upon his retirement, Art found the time to engage in one of his strongest passions - playing the trumpet. He played with numerous bands in Annapolis, MD and upon moving to New Bern, NC, played in the Craven County Community Band, the Al Lewis Big Band, the Southernaires Big Band, and the Craven Brass Quintet. In his eight decades of service, life, love, family, and friendship, Art touched many other lives in a positive and fulfilling manner. He will be missed and remembered by his family, neighbors, friends, old school mates, old shipmates, and old band mates. There can be no more fitting testimony to a life well-lived and well-spent.
