CONLEY, Robert C., of Sebastian, FL. and South Portland, ME, passed away April 6, 2017, after a lengthy illness, at his home in Sebastian, Fla. He was a 1960 graduate of South Portland High School. Upon graduation, Bob joined the Navy and spent the next 10 years on submarines based out of Holy Loch, Scotland. When he left the service, he went to work for Bath Iron Works. He and his wife, Marion Woodworth, moved to Damariscotta and raised their two children, Richard and Jennifer.Upon retiring, they moved to Sebastian and lived the good life.Bob was predeceased by his parents, Bud and Ellie Conley; and his brother, Michael. He leaves his wife, Marion; son Richard, of Massachusetts; daughter Jennifer and her husband Matt, of Georgia; sister Donna Conley Plummer, of Cape Elizabeth; four grandsons, Aaron, Eli, Cole and Graham. Private services were held in Sebastian, FL

ELMORE, Matthew Gerald, 29, passed away Thursday April 13, 2017 at University Hospital. He was in the US Navy and served aboard the submarine USS Kentucky as an IT1(SS). He was a member of Faith Chapel Church. He is survived by his loving wife LeAnn (Kuntz) Elmore, two daughters Ashlynn Grace and Caylynn Faith; parents, Jerry and Shelia Saylors; and his sister, Fairan Saylors. His funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday April 18, 2017 at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Hwy., with burial at Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday and after 10 a.m. Tuesday.Published in The Courier-Journal on Apr. 16, 2017


JOHNSEN, Carl Oscar, 88, of Wappingers Falls NY, entered into rest Thursday, April 13, 2017 at home, surrounded by his family. Son of the late Carl O. and Maude Tracy Johnsen, he was born on September 9, 1928 in Brooklyn. He married Mary Houten on April 27, 1957 in the Bronx; Mrs. Johnsen survives at home in Wappingers Falls. At age 16, he sailed for Standard Oil Company as a deck hand aboard the SS Mobil Fuel. He enlisted in the Navy and reported aboard the USS Sea Robin (SS-407) on 10/22/1945. Carl had his picture in the National Geographic when the USS Sea Robin was the first US submarine to round Cape Horn. His son Carl, who predeceased him, also served in The Navy aboard the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN-633). Carl enjoyed his many years attending Sub Vet functions and serving as chapter president and memorial director. In addition he was a life member of VFW Post #8645 of New Paltz. In addition to his wife Mary, survivors include his children, Cathy Winkler and her husband, William of Pleasant Valley, and Peter Johnsen and his wife, Elaine of Hyde Park; sister, Ruth Carroll of Brooklyn; his daughter in-law, Cindy Johnsen of Kentucky; and many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Carl D. Johnsen; his brother, David Johnsen; and his sisters, Vera Govertsen and Laurel Ann Johnsen. Family will receive friends on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Carl's name to USS VI Hudson Valley Base, 4 Central Ave, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.

STEPHENS, Edward Jesse, 91, of Hammond, IN, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017 at his residence with his loving family at his side. Edward was born on January 12, 1926 in Hammond, Indiana to the late Clyde C. and Nora (Coffenberry) Stephens. Also preceding him in death are his sister, Virginia Plantinga; half brother, Claude " Beecher" Lynn; and his brother-in-law and close friend, Harold "Hap" Vaughn. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 67 years, Margaret (Diehl) Stephens. Of this union, they were blessed with 7 children, Robert (Alice) Stephens, Richard (Janis) Stephens, Janet (Jesse) Hernandez, Fred (Janet) Stephens, Carol (Gary) Prange, Peggy (Jay) Myers, and Edward (Jessica) Stephens; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and sister, Betty Vaughn. Ed is a 1943 graduate of Hammond Tech High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the submarine USS Kingfish during World War II in the Pacific Theater, as a Torpedoman Second Class. After the War, he served on the submarines USS Atule in the Arctic Ocean, and finished his tour on the USS Toro. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Upon returning he began working for local steel mills, and retired from Bethlehem Steel after over 40 years in the steel industry. He was an avid runner, running in the Chicago Marathon in 1979 at age 53. Ed also enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, water skiing, and traveling coast to coast with his wife and children to see other family and friends. Ed was generous with his time and talents, helping friends and family whenever needed. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandpa, and uncle. He will be deeply missed. Visitation will be Monday, April 17, from 11 am until the time of his funeral services at 2 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home (8178 Cline Ave.; Schererville, Indiana 46375). Burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu flowers, memorials may be given towards Calumet Hospice or Lake County Meals on Wheels.
