At random: The USS Cusk was only one of four US submarines to ever receive the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation - Gallantry for her service in Vietnam. Cusk, was awarded seven awards during 1965, 1967, 1968, and 1969,The other three boats were the USS Sculpin (SSN-590), the USS Razorback (SS-394), two awards during 1967 and 1969, and the USS Ronquil (SS-396), two awards during 1966-67 and 1968.

CORBETT Henry Arthur, 92, of Canton, passed away on June 11, 2017, with his family by his side. Hank was born on September 24, 1924, to Clarence (Ike) and Minnie (Schwerzler) Corbett. He was a graduate of Timken High School, Class of 1942. He attended the University of Dayton and the University of Akron. He married the love of his life, Theresa Smelko, on Oct. 16, 1954. They were lifelong residents of Canton, Ohio, and were married for 61 years. In his youth, he was very active in the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In his junior year of high school, he was elected to attend Buckeye Boys State. He served in the US Navy in World War II attaining the rank of Fire Controlman First Class making five war patrols on the submarine USS Plaice. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Submarine Combat Insignia with four stars, and five battle stars on the Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon. He was a loyal employee of Diebold, Incorporated for 32 years and retired in 1984 as General Manager of Electronic Security Systems. He was recognized nationally for his expertise in bank security. He volunteered for the Stark Development Board as a Marketing Consultant after retirement. In 1990 he resumed a marketing role as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the W.L. Jenkins Company, retiring in 2001. He was a dedicated member of Christ the Servant Parish at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church for over 61 years. He served many years as an usher, President of the School Planning Council, and volunteered on church and school committees. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 44, McKinley Eagles, North Canton Elks, a life member of The American Society of Industrial Security and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Theresa [January 2, 2016]; his parents; sister, Mary Alice Hagedorn; and brother, Edward Corbett. He is survived by his daughters: Debbie Garofalo of North Canton, Ohio, Diane (Chuck) Peabody of Carmel, Ind.; grandchildren: Anthony (Jenna) Garofalo, Maria (Anthony) Czekaj, Andrea (Billy) Sturm, Todd Peabody, Laura (Ryan) Davis, Sarah Peabody; great-grandchildren: Sofia Garofalo, Annie Davis, and another due in January; he is also survived by sister-in-law, Dorothy Corbett; and several nieces and nephews. Hank impacted many in his life well-lived. He was a devoted husband, father, and Papa, who loved unconditionally, and his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He will be forever remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, wisdom, integrity, fun-loving spirit, cherished friendships, commitment to his Catholic faith, and his waltzing with Theresa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 16th., at Christ the Servant Parish at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Lewis F. Gaetano as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. TOMAZIN, Frank Joseph, MCPO, USN, Ret., 86, passed away June 8, 2017 at his home in Chula Vista after a brief illness. Born February 18, 1931 in Warren, Ohio, to Karl and Louise Tomazin, both recent immigrants from Slovenia, he was the youngest of five children. He was baptized in St. Mary's Catholic Church in October 1935 and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School August of 1945. Frank joined the Navy in January 1951 and served honorably until his retirement in May 1973. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. His last assignment was on the USS Halibut, a nuclear submarine. While assigned to the Halibut he participated in Project Azorian which was a notable effort to recover a sunken submarine in deep water. After his naval service he worked at Raytheon Service Co. calibrating ECM systems aboard Navy ships. He then transferred to Unydine Corporation where he worked as a Radar Field Engineer. He then decided to fulfill one of his career ambitions and worked as a Technical Writer for M. Rosenblatt and Sons and Systems Integration and Development Inc. (SIAD).He married Joanne, the love of his life in September 2007 and he greatly enjoyed playing golf and traveling. Frank was active in the Fleet Reserve and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Frank is survived by his loving wife Joanne, sister Josephine, stepchildren Bob, Cheri, Julie and Glen, nieces and nephews Karen, Molly, Tyler, Casey and Mark.Services will be held at Glen Abbey "Little Chapel of the Roses" in Bonita, CA, on Friday, June 23 at 1:00 PM. CROSSMAN, John passed peacefully away, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday 28 May 2017 at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. He was a cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather and he will be greatly missed. He spent the majority of his adult life in Aylesbury, moving here to join the fire service having served in the Royal Navy. He was a founder crew member of the Belfast, aged 16 and ended his service as a submariner. A hero to many. GAY, John Thomas, 57 of Knoxville, formerly of Pine City, MN, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017. John was was born on April 28, 1960, of the Methodist faith, and owner and operator of PAPS Plumbling. John was, a U.S. Navy veteran serving on submarines, USS Sturgeon, USS Narwhal, USS San Francisco, and battleship USS Missouri. Proud life member of the NRA, Range Safety Officer for John Sevier Rifle Range, Cubmaster & Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America and numerous other organizations. John was predeceased by his parents, Dolores and Tom Gay: brothers, Robert (Bobby) and Michael Gay. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Gay; daughter, Amanda and husband, Charlie Trout; son, Johnathan Gay; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy Zavadil (Rod) and Deborah McKeown (John); brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott (Kathy) Gay, Neil (Diana) Gay, David (Colleen) Gay; special friends, Steve Vandergriff and Bob Jones; several nieces and nephews and numerous other family members. O'MEARA, Peter John, 79, of Colchester, widower of the late Barbara Ann (Johnson) O'Meara, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Born May 6, 1938, in Torrington, he was the son of the late William Paul and Edith Elizabeth (McElhone) O'Meara. Mr. O'Meara served proudly as a submariner with the Navy aboard the USS Spikefish (SS-404) during the late 1950's. For over 35 years, he had worked as a procurement specialist for Pratt & Whitney aircraft before his retirement. Peter enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether it hiking, birdwatching, gardening or driving his tractor. He was also an avid animal lover and had many four-legged companions that he cherished over the years. Most importantly, he was a devoted family man and will be greatly missed. He leaves four daughters, Jodie LaRosa and her husband, Christopher of Colchester, Michelle Cech of Colchester, Patrice Taurisano and her husband, Tony and Kathleen O'Meara, of upstate New York; six grandchildren, Jack, Matthew, Sam and Will LaRosa, Jennifer Taylor and T.J. Taurisano; a brother, Thomas O'Meara and his wife, Dorothy of Colchester; two sisters, Elizabeth Wiley of Seattle, WA and Jere Hollister and her husband, Bob of Bridgewater; and numerous extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife of 38 years, who predeceased him on Dec. 20, 2010, and his parents, he was predeceased by his half siblings, Patricia and Brian O'Meara. The family will receive guests starting at 11 AM Saturday (June 17th) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, before a Chapel Service at 1 PM at the funeral home. MORRIS, Kenneth (n), 94, a Sarasota resident for many years, died in Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Monday night June 12, 2017. Ken was born June 20, 1923 on a farm outside of Philadelphia and moved to Haddonfield, NJ when he was in the 6th grade. He was on the championship Golf Team for Haddonfield High School. Ken set a course record, for his age group, at the Pine Valley Golf Course that lasted fifty years. He was an avid golfer all his life. Ken worked for Campbell Soup Company and Cuneo Press beginning his apprenticeship as a machinist. He was in the submarine corps of the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 and served in the Pacific theatre throughout the war. He qualified in USS Tigrone (SS-419) in 1945 and was MoMM2(SS) when released by the Navy in 1946. He returned to Cuneo Press after the war and attended Drexel University in Philadelphia studying Engineering. He worked at the U.S. Steel plant in Morristown, NJ and later became an engineer for Langston Company in Camden, NJ. Ken was married to the former Myrna Armstrong of Collingswood, NJ, who died May 13, 2013. They moved to Sarasota in 1973 when Ken became an independent engineering consultant for the paper box industry working in numerous foreign countries including Japan, the Philippines, and Nicaragua. He also worked at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for many years, and helped to set up the valet parking services there. He was a frequent writer of "Letters to the Editor" of the Sarasota Herald Tribune. He enjoyed sports, politics, animals, and close friends. Ken "Lived a Lot, Loved a Lot, and Laughed a Lot" and will be missed by his many close friends and extended family.
