At random: George Washington Endorsed the use of the first American submarine, David Bushnell's TURTLE, during the Revolution. Following the vessel's attack on a British man-of-war, he discussed the potential use of submarines in a letter to Thomas Jefferson.

FOOTE, Russell Lee, of Templeton, CA, passed away on 3/13/2017, surrounded by his family, on the ranch he dearly loved. Born Oct. 10, 1929 to Francis and Martha Foote, he was predeceased by wife Eleanor Monte Foote, and brother Francis "Jerry" Foote. Russ had loving companions that went ahead of him also, namely Jo Van Leuwen and Clara Downs. Russ served in the Navy, a submariner, stationed out of San Diego and Key West. He fondly remembered those times and the opportunity to see the Mediterranean and Pompeii. When his time was done in the Navy he came home to receive a degree in Education and Industrial Arts from UCSB where he met his future wife Ellie. They were happily married for many years. He later received his Masters from USC. His first teaching job was at DeAnza Jr. High. The school had just been built, Russ being the first woodshop teacher. This staff was very tightknit, many of them still there when they retired 35 years later. Russ enjoyed running a shop that taught his students woodworking, fiberglass construction, furniture construction and finish, and of course the dreaded math. For many years he was an active member and president of the "Ghost Riders" 4x4 club. He was in many a caravan into the mountains, deserts and back country of California and the west. Public service included projects with the US Forest Service, where they planted over 1000 trees and built camp grounds and picnic tables for many of the camps around the Ojai Valley. During the summer months Russ was always busy building houses and doing remodeling with some of his great friends. We had wonderful camping trips growing up in his family, Canada, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona and Baja Mexico. Russ appreciated a great sunset, a good barbecue and a happy dog. He is sorely missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his sister-in-law Donna Foote, daughters Susan Gustafson, Becky Hill, and Trissa Foote, son-in laws Travers Hill and Jerry Gustafson, Jan Rusk and family, and his dear friend Helen; 3 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Happy Trails Daddy! Published in Ventura County Star on June 16, 2017
