BURKE, Thomas Joseph, passed to eternal life July 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and holding the hand of his wife of 60 years. A resident of Ft. Pierce, FL, Tom lived 83 full, wonderful years. Born on Staten Island, New York, Tom attended Manhattan College and served in the Naval Reserve prior to receiving an appointment to the US Naval Academy. He graduated with the class of 1957 as a member of the 3rd Company. He served aboard the USS Essex before attending submarine school and served in the USS Angler as the chief engineer and navigator. In 1963, he reported to the USS Ethan Allen as the assistant weapons officer. In 1964, he completed Naval Nuclear Power training and was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln until he resigned his commission as Lieutenant Commander in 1969. Upon leaving the military, Tom worked for the Long Island Lighting Company as a plant engineer and startup manager and later as the project manager for the construction of a large nuclear plant. In late 1978, Tom was engaged by a Middle Eastern contractor to build and operate what was then the largest power and desalination plant in the world. In 1983 he was transferred to Paris, France, as senior vice president for the construction of 16 major projects in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Abu Dhabi and Yemen. Tom returned to the States in 1986 and during the next 31 years he worked as a consultant providing technical, project management and dispute resolution services to bonding and insurance companies and construction contractors. He was a registered professional engineer, a certified general contractor, and a construction arbitrator and he enjoyed teaching science and math at a local high school. He was a kind, generous, intelligent man of integrity who was loved and looked up to by all who knew him. Throughout his life Tom quietly volunteered many hours to civic and charitable organizations. He was a faithful example of leaving the world a better place than he found it. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Nifenecker; his beloved wife of 60 years, the former Janet Lillian Larsen; their sons, Tom and Leo; their daughters Kerry and Janet; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday July 29 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Vero Beach, Florida, and military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 189. MORGAN, Robert Vernon, CAPT, USN, Ret., passed away July 2, 2017 with his loving wife of 55 years, Lucy, at his bedside. He was born in Kansas City, MO March 28, 1937, and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1959. He married Lucille Beebe of Covina, CA, in 1962. As a submarine officer he served on the USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN-610), was a Plank Owner of the USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658), Executive Officer of the USS Scamp (SSN 588) and Commanding Officer of the USS George Washington (SSBN-598). He served in the Pentagon prior to Major command of the USS Orion (AS-18) stationed at La Maddalena, Italy. Capt. Morgan culminated his career as CO, Naval Astronautics Group, Pt. Mugu, CA, where he managed the Trident missile satellites. Capt. Morgan's commendations included a Legion of Merit Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal among others. Bob and Lucy retired to Sonoma where he enjoyed golfing, biking, skiing and traveling with his wife. He is survived by his wife, his sons, Lance (Angela), Rob (Julie) and Mike (Sheri), and seven grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at the Coronado Library, 6th & Orange on Sat., July 29, 2017 from 1 to 4 PM. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
