MASTERPOLIS, Charlie T., 96, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 with loved ones by his side. Born June 9, 1922, Charlie was a first generation American. He was raised 2 Shorecrest Ct.in Savannah, Georgia by his parents who emigrated from Kalamata, Greece 1900. Charlie was the seventh child out of eight, all of whom have preceded him in death. He graduated from Commercial High School and Armstrong College. As a young man, he joined the US Navy, where he honorably serviced on a submarine during World War II. Upon returning to Savannah, he helped run the family business, Christy's Department Store on Tybee Island. Charlie was a dedicated lifelong member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as President of the Parish Council for many years and chairman of the annual Greek Festival for over 20 years. In 1989, the Honor of Archon was bestowed on him by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Later, Charlie was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree from the Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios for his countless years of service and contributions to the School. Charlie's commitment to philanthropic organizations extended to many in and out of the community of Savannah including Alee Temple, Shriner Children Hospital and the 32nd Masons. He was also the past president of the American Business club, Islands Exchange club, and Order of the AHEPA fraternal organization. Charlie dedicated his later years in life to helping others. He is survived by his close friend and cousin Tommy Sullivan who has been devoted to the Masterpolis family since he was a young child. Gale Tidwell a longtime friend and companion, as well as, faithful friend Eddie Lambros. He is also survived by cousins, Nick and Peter Masteropoulos, Elias, Eleni Joanna and Anthony Stasionos and numerous God children. Visitation will be held at St. Paul's Greek Church on Tuesday, July 18th, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm, followed by the Trisagion at 7:00pm. Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, July 19th at St. Paul's Greek Church. Interment will follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul's Greek Church, Savannah, Georgia or Tybee Island Historical Society, Tybee, Georgia. FREEMAN, Roderick Lea, was born 1/8/1928 and passed away 7/2017. He was an Engineer for over 25 years focusing on service, repair and installation of oil field equipment. At 18 he enlisted in the Navy completing engineering school and later submarine school. In 1955 while living in Liberty, Texas and working offshore, he met Bonnie. They married and had two children, Sheryl and Jeff, and he is step dad to Bill and Bonnie. In 1967 oil was booming and Rod began traveling all over the world. He traveled to over 29 countries and also traveled domestically. In 1976 Rod moved his family to Memorial Chase in Spring, Texas. He was well known by many as "Grandpa" and for being a devoted swim team spectator, pit boss for Pine Wood Derby and a volunteer grandparent at Krahn Elementary. Rod and Bonnie spent many years participating in Waco Street Machine Show with young men who had been friends of their son, Jeff. Rod stayed active until his mid 8Os driving for a wholesale printer company. Rod enjoyed reading the newspaper and working the crossword puzzles. Most of all he loved to make people laugh with his witty remarks. A funeral service will be held at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest, Spring TX 77379 at 10:00am Wednesday, July 19, 2017. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the service. Published in Houston Chronicle on July 18, 2017
