HIRT, Donald J., 81, Estero, FL and Legend Lake, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 22, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Milwaukee, WI on February 9, 1936, to the late Harold Hirt and Jane (Hufschmidt) Bair. On November 16, 1957, he married Viva Jean Oetzel in Milwaukee, WI. Don was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Shawano, WI. He graduated from North Division High School, Milwaukee in 1953 and he served his country in the U.S. Navy as a submariner from 1956-1958. Don was a self-taught man; there was virtually nothing he couldn't create or fix. He had a love for NPR's Click and Clack, woodworking, and making things out of copper tubing. Don was a family legend when it came to making homemade pizzas or old fashioned's (it's all about the muddling). He was a proud union member. For 57 years, he was a member of the UA and the Local 298 Steamfitters and Plumbers. Don worked for Anderson Brothers Refrigeration in Milwaukee. After moving to Green Bay in 1974, he worked first at Tweet Garot before owning his own businesses, HVAC System Service and Don Hirt's Service, up until his retirement at 62 years of age. Don loved spending summers at his home on Legend Lake. In his younger years, he sailed the lake on his Butterfly and showed off on his water skis. Later, he enjoyed cruising the lake with family and friends on the pontoon, "Dun Skiing." Don and Jean, upon retirement, spent their winters in Estero, FL, where he enjoyed going to the beach, soaking up the sunshine, and looking for the perfect rum runner. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Viva Jean Hirt; five children: Susan (Mark) Twombly, Prairie Du Sac; Steven (Brenda) Hirt, Hobart; Gregory Hirt, Oconomowoc; Jeffery (Candy) Hirt, Denmark; and Amy (Michael) Wagner, Marinette; 11 grandchildren: Nicole (Cory Mittenzwei), Alexandra (Chris Geraghty), Matthew, Michael, Thomas, Mitchell, Sarah, Jessica, Jennifer, Katie and Madeline; and 2 great-grandchildren: Ethan Mittenzwei and Payton Geraghty. Don is further survived by his foster daughter, Brenda (Mark) Edwards; brother, Kenneth (Arline) Bair; 2 brothers-in-law: Glenn (Irene) Oetzel and Leon (Carol) Oetzel; and sister-in-law, Lorraine Oetzel and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Charles Bair; sister, Carol Schwister; and brother-in-law, Myron Oetzel. Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. after 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 30, until time of service. Funeral service 4:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home with Deacon Bill Cantwell officiating. Burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in Sheboygan. In lieu of floral expressions a memorial fund has been established in his name. Online condolences may be sent to Don's family at www.prokowall.com. The Hirt family would like to extend a special thank you to the following for the care and support they gave Don and Jean. Including, but not limited to, Cardinal Ridge Residential Care, Allouez Parkside, Amedisys Home Health and special friends, Jim and Carol Dillenberg.
