At random: "The Turkish skipper of ex-USS Tang, when asked about the difference between the German designed and built replacement boats for their retiring ex-US boats, is reported to have said, "American submarines are built for war, German submarines are built for export."
Thank you all!!

Subject: Thank you all!!

As you have learned by now, my father passed on July 16th. For those that know me, know how very, very difficult this has been because of the relationship he and I had.

I have read each and every post on this thread and will never be able to express how much I appreciate every single word and what they mean to me.

My father had 3 daily computer rituals; check Facebook, check email and check this BBS. Since his brain surgery in January, he spent less time on his computer but he always enjoyed reading the sea stories be it here, or on Facebook. You were all his brothers and he appreciated your friendships over the years.

Dad left 100% of his military memorabilia to me, with specific instructions on what he'd like seen done with any item I did not want to keep. Some will go to St Mary's Museum, some will go to other family members, and some to his former shipmates. I am not ready to let go of any of it just yet but when the time comes I will make a post here about some of the items.

For those interested, dad's cremains will be buried at Evergreen Cemetery, in Lipan, Tx, next to mom's on August 20th, which would have been her 89th birthday. There will only be a graveside service, but he will be given full military honors. The service will be at 0830 for a couple of reasons, but the major one is this is Texas and it gets hot as hell here in August!
I have already made all the arrangements with the Naval Honor Guard and the Patriot Guard will also provide an escort for the family from Dad's house to the cemetery, and then stand a Flag Line during the service.

Anyone wishing to attend should look in Granbury Tx for accommodations.
I am holding up okay but am not so sure my brother Richard is. It's going to take us both a while to accept that he is gone!
For those wanting to reach out, I can be reached at robin@lipan.net or on Facebook. My brother Richard can be reached at richard13ator@gmail.com, or Facebook as well.

Thank you again for all the kind words and for your friendships to my father all these years.

G'day Robin,
It was a pleasure and an honour to have met your Dad, to be hosted by y'all back in 2004.
Love and best wishes to you and your family.

Dear Robin,

As always, so eloquently well put. The many domestic and international messages of sympathy you have received regarding your Dad are pure testament to how highly he was regarded by the submarine brotherhood. I'm sure the same respect applies to his civilian status within his local community and both will be the poorer for his passing. Please accept the heartfelt condolences of the Merseyside branch of the Submariners Association (UK) to you and your brother at this very trying time.

Sincerely

Pedro

Roy was a unique individual.  There have been many that have stood our here - some for their "high energy" and some for their reserve and inner strength - Roy was the latter for certain.

It always hurts to lose someone here but some, like Roy, just hurt a little more...

I was fortunate to get to know both your folks when they were in good health and see and enjoy them at their best.

I first met your Dad, Roy, in a bar in a snowstorm in Michigan. We became instant friends and shipmates. When the snow melted he brought your mum to Michigan along with the famous, pies. I met up with them at the VFW National Children's Home and we spent the day together. Magnificent couple that epitomized what it meant to be in love with your soulmate. They were a joy and an inspiration to be around.
