My brother took a cruise up the Erie Canal from Rhode Island to I think Chicago. Included was a stop at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. He isn't subs, served on USS Sperry, but he toured Cobia because I told him he had too. As luck would have it, there were two Sub officers along on the cruise. One a Nuke, the other a Diesel. To make a long story short, one of the officers is married to Captain Becker's daughter Gail. I now have a Cobia "T" shirt signed by Gail Becker. If that isn't some kind of coincidence, I don't know what is. He said she was quite proud to sign it, as it was her first requested autograph. |

I thought it shut down a hundred years ago and much of it was filled in. |

Cruise from Rhode Island to Chicago via the Erie Canal? Could be done, I suppose, but a strange route. 
Having cruised the Erie Canal with my parents back in the '50's it was very slow going and not very interesting.

Now let me see, if I was a pinger I could fire a salvo. However, I will cut you all some slack. The cruise was great, only problem was no laundry. However they were dealing with a guy that in younger years canoed the Thousand Islands and drove to Alaska in the early sixties. Walked the Union Canal from Bernville to Reading, Hiked the Appalachian trail. So the sink got used correctly. Yes it only accesses certain parts of the canal. However, at all of the stops there is something to do. Plus pastries, sticky buns included, 24 hours a day. He hasn't commented on losing any weight. |

As an interesting side note. The Erie canal was finished on time and UNDER budget. It was built by hand power. We can't even build the 2nd ave subway in 40-50 years, with power driven drill moles etc...We're always running out of money.
I wonder what the difference was back then and now, besides power equipment.

Back in July, we were vacationing in Canada, along the shore of Lake Erie west of Buffalo and saw a small cruise ship out on the lake heading toward Buffalo.
I wondered if they were going to visit the Navy Display in Buffalo:
