At random: On August 17, 1958, the USS SKATE circumnavigated the globe in about fifty minutes. The SKATE was at a radius of about two miles from the North Pole at the time, and the distance traveled in the circumnavigation was about twelve miles.

KEPLER, Harry Simmons, Jr., 91, of Stow, Ohio, passed away on August 8, 2017.Harry is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen (Clark) Kepler; son, Theodore E. Kepler (Kolleen); and grandson, Daniel Kepler. In 1942 Harry joined the Navy Submarine Services. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor onboard the submarine USS Dolphin until he received a medical degree discharge. Harry had a musical background and was quite a pianist. He enrolled in the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, graduating with a Piano Technology Degree. Harry ran a very successful business until he retired in 2000 after 52 years as a piano technician. This proved to be a very good profession for Harry and he had many great experiences tuning for and befriending many musicians such as Liberace, Roger Williams, Ferronte and Teicher, etc. Harry also had a talent for car racing and was the Ohio Racing Champion in 1957-58. Never forgotten were his submarine years and he was an active member of the Northeast Ohio Submarine Veterans Association. Harry and Mary Ellen were married in 1960. They travelled extensively and were inseparable for 57 years sharing total happiness. Harry took great pride in saying they never had a major disagreement. Cremation has taken place and at Harry's request there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at Tallmadge Lutheran Church on Saturday, August 12th at 4 p.m. Private inurnment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman at a later date. ELLSBERRY, Walter, was born on August 26, 1943 and passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. Walter was a resident of Chillicothe, Missouri at the time of passing. He was a 1961 graduate of Chillicothe High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 until 1977, where he served on four different submarines. A memorial service will be held at the Prather Cemetery on Elk Road, Browning, Missouri, on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Prather Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Lindley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Missouri 64601.


LEE, Paul M., 62, of Milton Florida, formerly from Sharptown Maryland, passed away on Sunday July 2, 2017. Born June 4, 1955, in Salisbury Md, he was raised by his loving parents, Betty and William Wheatley of Sharptown. He was a 1973 graduate of Mardela High School. After graduating he spent several years with Copes Candy Co. and then Frito Lay Co. at which point he joined the U.S. Navy. He became part of the submarine fleet where he served aboard the USS James Monroe, USS Francis Scott Key and the USS Tucson. While serving active duty he received a Bachelor's Degree in Vocational Education from the University of Phoenix. He succeeded in securing the classification of Machinist Mate Master Chief through hard work and diligence. He served his country for twenty-three years and retired in August 2002. Upon retiring he secured a position with Oceaneering, Inc. until illness compelled him to resign in 2013.
In his younger years Mickey enjoyed all sports, Scouts, hanging out with his friends and family, playing pool at Mack's pool hall and all the benefits a small town offers. As an adult he delighted in spending time with his wife, children, grandson and friends. He enjoyed taking walks, golfing and attending church with his devoted and loving wife Jenny. Mickey is survived by his loving wife of 41 years Jenny Carbaugh Lee, two sons Paul Lee Jr, Jeffrey W. Lee, daughter-in-law Kris and grandson Gabriel, all of whom reside in Fl. Along with his mother Betty Wheatley, sister Vicki Hastings, brothers Billy Wheatley & Richard Wheatley all of Sharptown Md., nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father William Wheatley, Brother Charles Wheatley, nephew Michael Hastings and several other beloved family members. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Sharptown at 2PM where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Galestown Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market. Published in The Daily Times on Aug. 11, 2017


MEGEE, Gary Allen, was born on July 22, 1946 and passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017. Gary was a resident of Fairfield, Pennsylvania at the time of passing. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War aboard submarines. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.


NILSEN, John A., was born on November 8, 1928 and passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017. John was a resident of East Hampton, Connecticut at the time of passing. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy submarine service at just 17 years old and trained in diesel engines. A memorial service will be held at the Haddam Neck Congregational Church, 408 Quarry Hill Road, Haddam Neck on Saturday August 26th at 11:00 AM. There are no calling hours. OESCH, William L., was born on May 18, 1950 and passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. William was a resident of Arthur, Illinois at the time of passing. Bill was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Bill served in the United States Navy where he was active in the nuclear submarine corp and later served in the Naval Reserves. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Mason Point Chapel near Sullivan with visitation 2 hours prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery with military rites accorded. He was a member of the Arthur AF&AM Masonic Lodge #525 where he served twice as the Grand Master; and the American Legion Post. Memorials are suggested to the Arthur Boy Scouts or the Graham Veterinary Clinic in Arthur.


SWANSON, Raymond, was born on April 11, 1932 and passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Raymond was a resident of Lorain, Ohio at the time of passing. Mr. Swanson was a 1950 graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Plains. He served in the US Navy as a submariner during the Korean conflict. Friends will be received on Friday August 11 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home 700 West Erie Avenue Lorain, Ohio, 44052 where the rosary will be prayed at 6:00PM. Prayers will be said on Saturday August 12 at 9:15AM in the funeral home prior to the funeral mass which will be offered on 10:00 AM at Nativity BVM at 418 West 15 Street Lorain, Ohio with Reverend Fr. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain with full military honors.
