CALVER, Donald Richard, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, with his son, Dave and son-in-law, John by his side. He'd had five incredible days with dozens of visitors at his Cayucos home with Central Coast Hospice and caretakers Julie and Rodger making that possible. Don was born in Lowville, NY on February 7, 1927, and joined the U.S. Navy the day after graduating from Lowville Academy. He attended sonar school in San Diego before serving for two years on the submarine, USS Rock (SS-274). In later years, he has hosted fellow submarine vets at his house before joining them in the annual Cayucos Fourth of July parade. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951, married Carol Nuspliger the following year and celebrated 44 years together before her death in 1996. They had two sons: Rick, who passed away in 1996 and Dave (Palm Springs). Don was intelligent, creative, quick-witted and loyal. He loved jazz, books, sports and limericks. He treasured his family and the many friendships he developed over the years. He cherished his time with his son, Dave and loved every minute of his frequent visits. Nothing made him happier than the days and nights he had with Dave, his son-in-law John and their dogs Zelda, and then Ernie. Don's daily life over the last 20 years was enriched by time spent with his companion, Genevieve Apel. They played ping-pong, watched baseball and shared many trips and adventures, always remembering to call each other at the end of each day to say goodnight. All of Genevieve's family love him and consider him a member as well. Don had a passion for woodworking. He was incredibly talented and belonged to the Central Coast Woodcarvers, where his work was recognized with many awards at shows over the years. He specialized in figures (monks, Native Americans) but also carved walking sticks and flutes. He was a devout member of St. Timothy's Catholic church in Morro Bay, where he contributed his time and talents, recently toward the parish renovations. He sang in the choir and counted money after mass. Don will be missed by his friends and family, his weekly Tuesday coffee group foursome, his WWII submarine vet group, where he had been one of the longest surviving members, St. Tim's parishioners, and his pals at The Coffee Pot. A funeral mass Celebrating Don's Life will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, August 28, 2017, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 962 Piney Way, Morro Bay (805) 772-2840.
