HAMMOND, Russell Henry Louis, 91, went home to Jesus on September 3, 2017. His loving wife of 69 years, Joy, was at his side when he passed. Born April 18, 1926, Russ was a lifelong Macomb County resident. He graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1943 and entered the US Navy, serving as a submarine radioman during World War II. He qualified in submarines in USS Cochino in 1946 and was RM3(SS) when released by the Navy. After the war he met Joyce Elaine Jensen and was married. Russ was a Mt. Clemens regular firefighter and then served as a volunteer for many years, retiring as Chief. He was employed by Detroit Edison (DTE Energy) as a service planner, retiring before he was 60 years old so he and Joy could spend time traveling and enjoying their family. For thirty years they were "snowbirds", spending winters in Lakeland Florida. Russ was a member of the Mt. Clemens Old Crowd, Metropolitan Club, VFW, American Legion and WWII Submarine Veterans. He enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards, carving ducks, riding motorcycles, and family times, especially those at their home on Armada Ridge Road in Richmond Township. Russ was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Margaret Hammond and an infant son, Mark. He is survived by his wife, Joy who resides at Rose Assisted Living in Clinton Township, son Robert (Carol) of Algonac, daughter Carol Wiltshire (Jim) of Warren, son Richard (Mary) of White Lake, sister Gloria Price of Mt. Clemens, sister Lorraine Beyer of Livonia, brother Edward Hammond of New Jersey, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. A lifelong Lutheran, Russ was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton Township and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Armada. Visiting hours will be at the Will and Schwarzkoff Funeral Home, Mount Clemens. Burial will be at Cadillac Memorial Gardens in Clinton Township. The family has requested that memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, the WWII veterans, or Our Savior Lutheran Church, Armada. HEITZENRATER, Clair Eugene, 65, of LaSalle, passed away at home on Monday, September 11, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 7, 1952 in North Tonawanda, New York. One of six children born from the union of Reverend Samuel Clair Heitzenrater and Carlene Louise (Reed) Heitzenrater, he graduated from North Tonawanda Senior High School with the Class of 1970. Gene attended State University of New York at Buffalo for two years. In 2001, he would obtain his bachelor of sciences in nuclear engineering technology from Regents College. Gene enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country honorably for eight years. A Machines Mate First Class, Gene was aboard the submarine USS Alexander Hamilton and stationed near Holy Loch, Scotland. Gene married his love, Donna Roberts at Bible Fellowship Church on April 12, 1996. Gene was a wonderful provider and employed by Browns Ferry Nuclear and Port St. Lucie Power Plant, he worked in the control room as a Senior Reactor Operator with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He retired from FERMI after twenty-four years of service on August 1, 2006. Gene was an example of great faith in God to his family and friends. A devout member of the North Monroe Street Church of God, he was an active volunteer participating with the food closet, as an usher, and video ministry. He also enjoyed Bible Study and gathering for Primetimers. Gene was a life member of the Matt Urban American Legion Post #40 and the National Rifle Association. Gene loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved traveling and camping, and especially riding his Harley. Gene truly enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His passing was preceded by two brothers: infant Terry Lee and Rodney Allen. To cherish his memory, he leaves his beloved wife of twenty-one years: Donna; his parents; three daughters: Stacy Lewis, Ronda (Matthew) Michaud, and Kimberly VanDaele; two sons: David Heitzenrater and Derek Skeens; three siblings: William Lee (Mary), Debra Lynn (John) Simpson, and Sybil (Gary) Alden; and nine grandchildren. Friends may gather from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe (734) 384-5185. He will lie-in-state from 10:00 a.m. until a Celebration of His Life at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the North Monroe Street Church of God, 2393 North Monroe. LAND, Ward Aaron, 78, of Opelousas, passed to eternal life on September 9, 2017. Left to mourn is his wife, Judy T. Land; his brother, Arthur David Land; his Aunts Faune Futral, Trudy Perry, and Doris Futral. Ward was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Perry Land and Alice Futral Land. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served five years in the submarine service. He graduated from USL in Lafayette and was employed for many years in the oil and gas industry as a supervisor. During his employment he worked in Louisiana, Texas, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Tunisia, and Venezuela. Mr. Land enjoyed his retirement years caring for his place in St. Landry Parish. He enjoyed fishing trips with his brother, David, and was an excellent cook. He was loved by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be scheduled in the future to celebrate Mr. Land's life. MEANS, Eugene Sloan, 77, of Cookeville, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 11, 2017, at his home. He was born Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1939 in Algood to the late Curtis Sloan and Ruth Kate Norris Means. Eugene, an avid fisherman, was of the Baptist Faith and a graduate of Lincoln County High School in Fayetteville. He earned a BS degree in business administration at Tennessee Tech University in 1980. He retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service. He spent most of his military career aboard nuclear submarines and teaching ICC Electronics at the Navy Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill. Following his military retirement, he retired a second time from Arnold Engineering Services in Tullahoma. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Eugene Sloan Means, Jr.; brother, Gerald Means; and second wife, Barbara Hammons Means. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Nicholas Giordano of Decatur, Ala.; grandchildren, P.J Giordano and Adrienne (Nigel) Rozario; brother, Harold (Kathy) Means of Fayetteville; and the mother of his children, Elise Means of Decatur, Ala. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 12 noon at the Algood Family Event Center with the Rev. Dow Allen officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Algood City Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the Algood Family Event Center. PACKARD, Larry Gene, 70, passed away September 11, 22017. He was the son of Floyd and Maxine (Bland) Packard of Oakley, KS. Born April 24, 1947 in Quinter, KS and resided in Wheeling, IL with wife Dina (Sarrafian) Packard and daughter Ashley Lynn Packard. Larry was the oldest of 5 siblings. He graduated from Oakley Senior High School in 1965; Larry continued his education at the Vocational School of Goodland, KS. Larry enlisted in the US Navy Boot Camp in San Diego CA in 1966. Receiving the Outstanding Recruit Award. Following Radioman 'A” School, Larry went to Submarine School in New London, CT and was honorably discharged from the Navy November 25, 1969. Preceded in death, father Floyd Packard and brother Randy Packard. Survivors include Mike of Oakley, Karen Baxter (Randall), Marlene and husband Mike Teeter of Hope KS; Terry and wife Joan of Petersburg, OH. In-laws include parents Albert and Seta Sarrafian, brothers-in-law; Edwin and Rita; and Alan and Cynthia. Larry held a special place in his heart for his furry kids Leon and Logan. Larry also enjoyed playing golf, riding his motorcycle, and shooting his guns. A visitation is being held Friday, at Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road (½ block east of Route 53), Rolling Meadows, IL 60008 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM with a memorial service following afterwards.
