At random: Insignia of the Navy's submarine service is a submarine flanked by two dolphins. Dolphins, or porpoises, the traditional attendants to Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea and patron deity of sailors, are symbolic of a calm sea, and are sometimes called the 'sailors' friend. In addition to the Dolphins, those World War II submariners who participated in successful combat patrols may wear the coveted Submarine Combat Insignia.

Just got home Monday. Absolutely amazing trip. Among many, many interesting places, we drove by Faselane. Saw 2 boats in port. Amazing facility. I asked our guide if he remembered when our Boomers were in Holy Loch... his response was " those American Laddies fornicated with every Scottish Lass within 100 miles!"

Those of us that had the experience of Shore Patrol manning the EM Club door at Dunoon landing, you would have seen the book of banned visitors. All Lassies that had given a gift to some American White Hat, and refused to get treated. There were eight to a page, pictures and all. Plus about fifteen pages. I remember one in particular had her age listed at 68. So, now that he is home, is the son of the South ready to join the battle to safe Stone Mountain?

Walt,

Have to admit that Grab-a-Granny nights were always an occupational hazard when north of the border.

Maybe not 'every Scottish Lass' - our people had similar attempts when the boats were undergoing construction and work-ups etc.

Within a 100 miles? Wasn't that far to Dunoon, Gourock, and Geenock. One trip to Glasgow; does that count?

That's Greenock. Probably spelled those wrong but not Dunoon.

I met a woman over the summer who was from Scotland. When I told her I had sailed out of Holy Loch she said something to the effect that Americans came stealing Scottish girls and kidnapping them to the States.

I don't think "kidnap" is correct unless it refers to the sailors being kidnapped.

I will always remember one returning crew flight landing in Charleston. There at the gate were five Scottish Lassies waiting on their tour of the states promised by various crew members during refit. The wives were not amused, and the rest of the crew almost ran out of the terminal.
