FAVREAU, James Alan, 73, of Honeoye, died August 26, 2017. Jim was a veteran of the US Navy and served as a nuclear submarine mechanic in the submarine service from 1961-1968. He loved to travel in his self-built bus conversions and spent most winters in Arizona. Jim was a certified Reiki Master and helped many with their quest to healthy living. Predeceased by his parents Paul & Jeanne Favreau, and step-father Dean Cox. Survived by his loving sons; Stephen (Paula) and Jeffrey Favreau both of WA; three granddaughters and one grandson; brothers, Charles Favreau of Livonia, David (Lucille) Favreau of NC, Michael Favreau of WA, and his sister Aleta (Glenn) Hamilton of Leicester. GROSS, William Newton, passed away peacefully, September 2, 2017, at home with family around him. Born in Seattle to William C and Marjorie Graves Gross, the middle of three children including his sisters Nona (Avery) and Geraldine. The Depression affected Bill's family and he grew up in rugged environments while his father, followed work. The family later settled in Olympia. Somewhere along the way he acquired the nickname "Skook", short for Skookum. He joined the Navy after high school and served as a submariner and pilot. After the navy, he married Mary Jane 'Janie' Shivas in 1954 and started a family, adding two children, Chris and Heidi (Kiemle). Bill attended the University of Washington where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and rowed crew. After a brief time selling tractors, Bill joined Kenworth in 1957, beginning a 30-year adventure during a time of tremendous growth for PACCAR. Bill steadily grew with the company, traveling the globe, retiring as Executive Vice President in charge of world-wide operations. In 1958, Bill was a founding member of the Lake Washington Rowing Club. An organization he has always held in his heart. In 1987, Bill retired from Paccar to spend much time at his retreat "Shortleaf Plantation" in Centralia, WA. He continued to travel the world as a yacht consultant, never slowing down his pace and doing everything with the strength of, in his words, a 'bull ox.' Bill married his second wife, Sirina Bontos in the late 90s. For all of you that shared in the adventure that was Bill's life, you know that no words can fully capture his story. HAMILTON, W Hugh "Pee-Wee", 89, of Hendersonville, passed away September 1, 2017 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Viola Hamilton; brother, J.B. and wife Helen; first wife, Roma Orr Hamilton along with several aunts and uncles. Hugh was a native of Andrews, NC. He graduated from Western Carolina University and received his Master's Degree from George Peabody College, Nashville TN. While at Western, he was Catamounts leading scorer and rusher. In 1948 he became an all North State Conference selection and added All-State honors in 1949 for Western Carolina's first ever conference football champions. He was a former Athletic Director/football coach in Andrews. While there the Andrews Wildcats were State Regional Champions in 1964, 1966 and 1967. He left Andrews in 1968 and became head football coach at Asheville High. In 1972, he came to East Henderson High in Hendersonville. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Western Carolina, Andrews High and East Henderson High. The football stadium in Andrews is named in his honor. He was a Navy Veteran serving on the submarine USS Sea Robin. He is survived by wife, Mildred Arrowood Brooks; son Bill Hamilton of Hendersonville; daughter, Terry and husband Terry Paige of Hendersonville; 3 grandchildren; one great grandchild; stepchildren, Mike Brooks and wife Florence, Sherry Brooks, Sheila Reid and husband Bernard; 5 step-grandchildren; and 5 great-stepchildren. HARRIS Richard Wayne, 70, of Reading, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Rosewood Nursing Center, Schuylkill Haven. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Keihm) Harris for 45 years. Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Richard was the son of the late Thomas E. Harris and Agnes (Kobler) Harris Kaumo. He was a graduate of East High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, Connecticut. Richard proudly served on submarines in the United States Navy from 1968, until his retirement in 1988. He later was director of food services for 22 years for the Skowhegan Area School District in Maine. In addition to his wife Margaret, Richard is survived by his daughters: Nadezhda A. Williams, of Woodside, New York, Kathleen M. Harris Brantman, wife of Charles Brantman, of Temple, Megan L. Harris of Philadelphia; and his grandsons Elliott and Alexander Brantman. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Ronald, James, and William Harris. Published in Reading Eagle on Sept. 3, 2017


JACKSON, William Benjamin, Sr., peacefully transitioned from his earthly life surrounded by family and friends on August 25, 2017. Born on Augusta Avenue in West Savannah, Georgia on September 14, 1926, to Rachel Jackson and Louis Hayes. Mr. Jackson was raised in Savannah, GA attending East Broad Elementary School, ultimately graduating from Alfred Ely Beach High School 1945. He was drafted into the United States Navy where he served on the diesel submarine USS Cubera (SS-347). After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Jackson attended Georgia State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1949. Mr. Jackson married Haselera Morgan in 1949. From this union, four children were born, Haseleria Shell, Victor Jackson, Carl Jackson, and William B. Jackson, II. Mr. Jackson's teaching and administrative career began in 1949 in rural Alabama at Arlington Literary and Industrial Institute. In 1952, he began his extraordinary and progressive teaching career in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, first at Paulsen Elementary/Junior High School until 1958, later at Sol C. Johnson High School, where he created the school's mascot, "Atom Smasher," and at Savannah High School. Mr. Jackson was awarded a National Science Foundation Scholarship which allowed him to complete a Master's degree Mathematics from Atlanta University in 1960. Mr. Jackson became the first Black Assistant Superintendent of the Chatham County Public Schools in 1971. Mr. Jackson was a noted and tireless Civil Rights Worker, marching with Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a personal friend of Julian Bond and marched with him in 1960 in Atlanta. Mr. Jackson was a life member of the NAACP and served as the President of the local NAACP chapter. Mr. Jackson received the Teacher of the Year Award, the W.W. Law Legacy Award, and NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Jackson was a founding member of Savannah State University's Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was a member of the Falcons and NAACP. Mr. Jackson attended St. Philip Monumental A.M.E. church. Mr. Jackson is survived by daughter Haseleria Shell and son William B. Jackson, II, MD and wife Harolyn, 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and many family, and friends. Interment at Catholic Cemetery. KELLER, Richard J., 92, formerly of Hialeah, FL passed away on September 3, 2017, in Jacksonville, FL. He was born July 17, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA, but grew up near Philadelphia. Mr. Keller and Anne, his wife of 53 years, moved from Springfield, PA, to Hialeah in 1954, after being chosen by the DuPont Corporation to manage the company's product testing center in West Hialeah. He managed this site until his retirement in 1988. Richard and Anne were long-time, active members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hialeah, all their children attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School. Mr. Keller was a Lector at Sunday mass, a member of the parish men's club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Boy Scout leader, and a very active volunteer in parish activities. During World War II, at the age of 18, Mr. Keller joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the submarine the USS Charr, once spending more than 6 months submerged off the coast of Perth, Australia, during the US/Japanese conflict. He returned to Pennsylvania after the war and married Anne, his childhood sweetheart. Mr. Keller loved the outdoors and took his family to campgrounds and wilderness areas all across the country. He loved canoeing, biking, hiking, backpacking, and exploring the Smoky Mountains in his beloved North Carolina where he and Anne had a vacation home. He was also an avid sailor who loved spending the day with his wife on Biscayne Bay off Matheson Hammock in southern Miami-Dade County. In 1999, he moved to Gainesville, FL and he spent his final years near St. Augustine, FL. Mr. Keller was predeceased by his wife Anne [12/18/1999] and his son John. He is survived by his sister Joan Beard of Melbourne, FL, his son Richard (Corinne) of Gainesville, FL, his daughter Diane Rubio (Joseph) of St. Augustine, FL, John's wife Deborah of Andrews, NC, 5 grandchildren: Connie, Tanya, Emily, Natalie, Malorie, and 8 great-grandchildren: Josie, Max, Tanner, Aiden, Annalee, Elijah, Levi, and Adelyn. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Catholic Charities. KOESTER, Joseph W., III, 49, of Red Lion, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Deborah A. (Pavel) Koester, to whom he was married 22 years. Born September 10, 1967 in Hamburg, NY, Joseph was a son of James Koester (Theresa) of Hamburg, NY, and the late Paula (Sommer) Koester. Mr. Koester served our country in the United States Navy during the Gulf War. Throughout his service he worked on many nuclear submarines. Joe worked as the fire marshal at Exelon Corporation for over 19 years. He also was a volunteer firefighter and past President of the New Bridgeville Fire Company. He was a member of the American Legion in Hamburg Post 527. In addition to his wife and father, Mr. Koester is survived by three children, Chelsea Koester (Levi), Hollie Koester (Dylan), and Joshua Koester; and a brother, Scott Koester (Kim) of Park City, UT. MOHN, Craig Steven, was born on August 4, 1949 and passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017. Craig was a resident of Wisconsin at the time of passing. After graduating from Baldwin-Woodville High School, Craig enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he served 6 years as an electrician, including tours with the nuclear submarine USS Skate.


SOULEYRETTE, Dumont Alden, 91, of Sonora and Upton, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at Thomson Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. Dewey was born Oct. 28, 1925, in Danville to Lon and Ava Sellers Souleyrette. He was a member of the Sonora United Methodist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He spent six years with the Navy where he served on a PT boat in the Philippines and then served on the submarines USS Sea Devil (SS-400) and USS Tilefish (SS-307) in the Pacific area. Later he served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He received a BS degree in agronomy from the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Alpha Zeta fraternity. He earned a master's degree from Mississippi State University in seed technology. He accepted a position as a staff member of MSU and he and his family moved to Starkville, Mississippi then they went to Brazil with MSU/ASID for seven years where he helped develop a seed program in Brazil, working with the Ministries of Agriculture and the universities. He traveled extensively throughout the country. After returning to the states, they came to the Sonora/Upton area where he taught school at LaRue County High School then worked in the field of agriculture until his retirement. In addition to his church activities, he was a Gideon for some years, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Sonora Fish & Game Club and a avid supporter of the American Red Cross. He gave 98 units of blood. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charlie Souleyrette; a brother-in-law, Rick Hartranft; and infant half-sister, Joyce Carol Souleyrette. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Stella Flowers Souleyrette of Upton; stepmother, Maggie Terry of Danville; a son, Dale Alden (Laurie) Souleyrette of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Sherri (E.J.) Bradley of Eastview; a half-sister, Gail (Rick) Hartranft of Knoxville, Tennessee; a sister-in-law, Mickey Souleyrette of Californa; six grandchildren, Phillip (Brandi) Miller of Elizabethtown, Jason Miller of Upton, Brent (Eza) Hall of Radcliff, Clare Souleyrette, Kyle Souleyrette and Kate Souleyrette; and four great-grandchildren, Jonah Miller, Mason Dailey, Landon Miller and Tucker Miller. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Sonora United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors follows in Sonora Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at Manakee Funeral Home in Sonora. SPRINGER, Ralph Edwin, 91, of St. George, UT, passed away August 31, 2017. He was the only child of Raymond Emile and Ada Lucille Springer. He was born July 12, 1926 in Denver, Colorado, but grew up in Los Angeles, California moving to Long Beach, California when he was a teenager. Ralph served during WWII as a submariner in the U.S. Navy. When he returned home he met and married Beverly Rubottom on October 4, 1947. They were married for 69 years. They have two wonderful daughters, Terri and Vicki. Ralph was a salesman. He worked for Laura Scudder Potato Chips for 18 years. In 1970, he started Springer Distributing and became the first distributor of Mother's Cookies in the state of Utah. He loved the grocery business and made many friends. He was known as the "Cookie Man". He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1963 and he and Bev were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964. He loved to serve in the Church. His first responsibility was Elder's Quorum President. He served as a High Councilman with assignment to serve with the Young Adults in the Utah Brighton Stake. Ralph and Bev moved to Park City, Utah where he soon became Bishop of the Park City 1st Ward. After moving to St. George, they served two missions in California, San Diego and Tahiti, Papeete. He served four years as Director of the Baptistery in the St. George Temple. He always said he was blessed to have the opportunity to serve his Heavenly Father. Ralph is survived by his wife, Bev; daughters: Terri (Steven) Demas and Vicki (Robert) Crockett; 2 grandsons; 2 granddaughters; and 10 great-grandchildren. Interment in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
